Kaplan Qbank USMLE

Hi !

I have been reading posts on this forum for awhile…and am really touched by all the support that you all have been giving each other…In that spirit, I was wondering if you guys can give me some input on my Step 1 prep.

Here are the stats….I have approximately 3 months…I plan to write it on July 30, and I can put in on an avg. only 7 – 10 hours of studying each day (weekends longer), as I am still in the middle of electives…however I have picked easier electives for the next 3 months, which gives me some days off during the week. I now average abt 45 – 52 on Qbank.
I was an average student during my first 2 years and have forgotten a lot of basic sciences stuff since then.

The books I am planning on using is as follows:

Anatomy, Neuro & Embryo: Kaplan lect. notes & high yield series for all 3.
Physiology: Kaplan & BRS (which one is better considering my time limit?)
Biochem: Kaplan
Pharm: First Aid & USMLE road map
Micro&Immuno: First Aid & PASS Notes
Path: First Aid, Kaplan & Golgian lects
Psych/Stats: FA
Overall review: USMLE secrets, USMLE STEP 1 recall, FA. (PASS notes & golgian if I have the time)
Questions: Appleton & Lange, Qbank

Any input into my “plan of attack” would be greatly appreciated!!!

I'd recommend using Kaplan for Biostats/Psych. Also...have you done the PASS program? I found that the Pass notes have alot of errors in them. For Physio...i really like Kaplan as opposed to BRS because it is an easier read. For Immuno...i am using Med. Micro and Immuno by Levinson which has an excellent 80 page section on immunology. You might want to use BRS or Goljan Rapid Review for Pathology instead of Kaplan. Goljan Rapid Review is especially good because it follows his lectures. Well thats about it....good luck!

I understand your time constraints, but I think your resources aren't enough (unless you have a very solid background for basic sciences) and they don't follow step 1's emphasis on high-yield subjects - sorry - see my posts at:

maria, sorry about your anguish and the delay in getting a response. you probably were unlucky in your timing.

well, P53, who is the guardian of students, has spoken and his advise cannot be 'bettered'. so go with his advise and you will not miss hte mark. you do have excellent time especially with the number of hours you are dedicating. also make good use of teh fact that you are still in med school. you still have access to you professors so yu can ask them to clarify concepts with you. the other plus on your side is when you start to study the basics again, tehy will make better sense to you. you will be surprised so do nto be discouraged.

GL.

Jaal, p53 and toilto....thank you for your support and advice!

p53 a.k.a "guardian of students"....I will be sure to read your posts and maybe revise my list of books...

I am especially concerned abt genetics and immunology. Jaal - thank you for recomendation abt Levinson.

here's hoping that I will be "in shape" for step 1 by july 30...

for genetics see http://www.prep4usmle.com/forum/thread/32684

for Immunology, ultimate review is 'Kaplan LN: Microbiology & Immunology' + Levinson.
If you want more details, get 'Basic Immunology', by Abbas, 2nd Updtd. Ed. 2006, 324p. (a textbook) + 'Review of Immunology', by Lichtman, 2005, 192p. (USMLE-style MCQs to this textbook), in the combination, or only one of them.

The levinson immunology is the same with Lange? I also heard about Jawets Immuno. I saw that the Lange is written by Levinson and Jawetz, but i dont know if its the same book u recommend

Levinson and Jawetz together were the authors of the earlier editions of this book. Jawetz died and the author of the 2004 edition was only Levinson. It's common misconception to call these books 'Lange series'. actually, Lange was the publisher of many medical books in many different series - Levinson and Jawetz's book belonged to the series 'Examination and Board Review', so the name of this book was 'Medical Microbiology & Immunology: Examination and Board Review'. then, the bigger publisher - McGraw-Hill has 'swallowed' Lange, with all its books and series. The name 'LANGE' remains on the cover of all those titles, which were earlier published by Lange, though the publisher now is McGraw-Hill.
www.amazon.com has recently announced the publication of the new edition of 'Medical Microbiology & Immunology: Examination and Board Review', but the name of this book is now changed to 'Review of Medical Microbiology & Immunology': http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0071460314/qid=1...
