Hi
I am a senior IMG from India and am planning to take up USMLE seriously. However what intrigues me is that what do I get/need to do after clearing all the steps?
I will be over 50 when I clear the test and all this while I have been working as a dermatologist back home. Can someone elaborate upon the options that are open in my case and what could be the best strategy.

It is such a general question. After you are done with the steps, you will get the ecfmg certificate and you are free to apply to all the programs in the country. Most of the application is done through the internet.. You might also need a visa, but i'm not the one to give you advise about this.

its impossible for u2get dermatology in usa inspite of ur tremendous experience unless u have stellar publications and are a big name in the field worldwide. i know a friend whose father cleared the mle at 55 and did im. he was a practicin plastic surgeon for 30yrs. if u dont need a visa - it might be possible in a small comm prog. but try to clear the mle with good scores and then plan further..

Hi,

there are quite a few things to consider, please donot think i am discouraging but you need to consider the pros and cons of starting your residency at the age of 50,struggle thru three years and then what?

If you are a practicing dermatologis in India with good income i would rather stay in India.

what about your family will they be able to adjust to this new environment and your new job? will you get to do dermatology in USA (realistically very unlikely!!) despite stellar credentials and even if u happen to get into dermat probably you will be knowing more than your attendings given your rich experience at home!!! and there is nothing much for you to learn!!

If you Are looking to come to usa for money then you are paid just enough to lead a decent life and saving would be minimal during the residency.

apart from these things think about relocating with your family to an entirely new culture during your 50's?

However after residency the income is good and u can lead a comfortable life and if ur happy to go thru all the training again for three years and settle down in usa then certainly go ahead and take the tests.

good luck with whatever decision you make

katz.

I met a guy during one of my interviews who was from philipines..he had done his dermatology residency back home but was now in final year of his IM residency..he told us he got accepted in dermatology residency because of IM experience in USA n they waived one or 2 years [ not sure if it was one or two] off for his dermatology residency..he seemed happy..tough road n lil bit more struggle but if thats wat one wants then i think one should go for it coz u only live oncenod

I know a doctor from my home country who came here in his fiftys and he was an FRCS. He did the steps with his wife and daughter and they all got residency spots. He was accepted in a decent unevrsity program . I think they took 2 years off his traing since he was trained in Uk. Anyway it will be very helpfull to do some observership just to Know somebody who can help.

If this is what you really want, if your reasons are very strong, go for it. Nothing is impossible! With faith and very hard work, anything is possible! I wish you the best of luck in figuring out your path, and achieving your goals!

PS. I really have some comments regarding some of the reply to your posts, but I'll just refrain...

BEST OF LUCK AND DON'T GIVE UP!

A.
