Aspirin causes a mixed disturbance in adults: Metabolic Acidosis and Resp. Alkalosis.
-The reason for the resp. alk. is that aspirin stimulates the respiratory center and causes hyperventilation--> decreases CO2---> Resp Alk...
-What is the reason for the Metabolic Acidosis??? Is it because salicylate is an acid, or is it due to compensation for the resp. alkalosis?
-What is the pH in adults with Aspirin OD? Normal due to the mixed disturbance?

In children, aspirin causes ONLY Metabolic Acidosis.... Why not Resp. Alkalosis?
pH will be increased?

there are 2 effects of ASA which are dependent on dosage

1. high therapeutic dose leads to uncoupling of oxid phosp leading to inc resp leading to low Pco2 and resp alk leading to kidney compen leading to HCO3 elim leading to resp alk. in adults, thsi compensation is stable but in children, toxicity may occur.

2. toxic doses lead to inhib of resp centre leading to dec resp, inc PCO2, and resp acidosis , there is also inhib of krebs cycle with uncoupling of oxid phosph leading to metab acidosis.

so the pattern for adults is resp alk to comp resp alk to resp acid to metab acid.
