Can family physicians apply fellowships in IM specialties, such as Cardio or Oncology? My plan is to do a residency in FP, then practice and make some money for 2-3 years. After that, apply a fellowship in Cardio or Oncology. Is it possible to do that? Or these fellowships require persons who did residency in IM only? From AAFP website, I know FP can apply fellowhips in sports medicine, geriatrics…But I really don’t want to do that. Thank you for your advice.

as far as i know, that's NOT possible. You'd require to do IM prior to apply to those fellows.

Thanks. But that is really a BAD news for me. My scores are low so finding a residency in IM seems mission impossible for me. Does that mean I have to say goodbye to my career as a specialist?

things are like that: If you wanna do a fellowship in Cardio or Onco, you have to do IM before that. OR you can do FM and then choose one of the fellows you can do with FM, but neither cardio nor onco. It's not uncommon that IMGs have to change their speciality of choice because of many reasons.

you're welcome. Maybe they look like bad news now, but you only have to think about it in detail and think if that's what you want/what do you want? and that's it. It depends on your situation. If you can have a better chance/lifestyle in your home country, it could be better to stay there. It depends on many variables. In my case, it's better to go to USA, even if I'm not gonna study my speciality+subspeciality of choice, so i'll do it.

Thank you for your encouragement. By the way, do you know anything about the job market of sports medicine? I found out from AAFP website that FP can apply fellowships in sports medicine. And it takes only one year. There are quite a few hospitals offering sports medicine fellowships. But just wondering the job market of sports medicine. Will there be many positions available for sports medicine physicians in the future? Certainly not as many as FP positions, I suppose. What do they do? Become a physician working for a track team for a high school?

Thanks, I found that too. It looks good, but only if I can find a position after the fellowship. I searched the ads of sports medicine physician. There is one link here: http://acsm.medcareers.com/seeker/search.asp Very unfortunately, very few positions.

Hi primarycare12, I don't know how bad are your scores, but in the first aid book, they have a list where they recommend if you need to pass, beat the mean or ace the exam in order to do a specific residency and in the column of COMFORTABLY PASS, you have peds, family practice, and internal medicine, I know since you are an IMG, which I think you probably are, the competition is more and it would be better to have great grades, but hey!, maybe it isn't that bad, you should try to apply to internal medicine programs, you can try to have a strong curriculum and personal statement so that can help you, but I don't think that you should rule out internal medicine as a choice for you, specially if that is what you really want. Just a thought. Good luck! Yolanda

Thanks so much for Yolanda and Chemamr. This is my first visit to this forum. I am so glad to find a lot of good friends here. Thank you for your suggestions. I think I will try some IM. If not possible, then go for FP.
