Thrombocytopenia is the low platelets and thrombocytosis is high platelets. Immmune thrombocytopenia is the commonest cause of thrombocytopenia. Several drugs may cause thrombocytopenia. This site gives a comprehensive list of drugs causing thrombocytopenia.

The opposite is is thrombocytosis. the commonest type of thrombocytosis is reactive thrombocytosis, where the platelet count increases secondary to some cause like GI bleeding. Essential thrombocytosis is increase in platelet count resulting from bone marrow hyper activity. polycthemia rubra vera is another myeloproliferative disorder that may cause increase in white cell count, hemoglobin and platelet count. You may get more information on polycythermia vera at this site.

thrombocytosis usually reffers to reactive increase in platelets, due to some inflamatory process.
trombocythemia is primary idiopathic increase in pstelet numbers

wouldn't it be easier to say low / high platelet count?.
besides, the blood tests will give you the platelet count. it's up to each of us how we call any variation in the normal platelet count.
