Dear all

I am bit confused with the whole residency application process.

I want to know how important it is to get into good program compared to ok programs for your professional future.

HOw much difference does it make if I do my residency in university hospital set up compared to community hospital set up.

I am asking this questions since I am struggling to go above 85 on my step 1 scores in mock exams and seriously considering to postpond it to increase the score. Logic is if I dont get a good score now, it will seriously hamper my application.

Background: Graduate 99 from India. PhD 2006 in very respectable university based program. Publications: 2 , Clinical experience: ~3months by september.

I also wanted to ask if I wait and try to increase my scores and get all scores by november how badly it affects my chances.

I am looking for internal medicine programs only.

there are good residents in community programs and bad residents in univ programs.
though univ program is desirable, if you match at a comm program , it wont be the end of your life.
people do get into fellowships fro comm progs also.
it all depends on your PD, your impression in the PD s and faculty s mind and your contacts ...i think research plays a smaller role than contacts.

in the job market, my seniors tell me that it doesnt matter as long as you are board certified.i was in the same situation as yours. i could not afford to wait anohter year for great scores and a great program.
so i got decent scores and a program which will give me what i was looking for .

sachida, an off-topic comment: I really like your quote- doubt is a luxury we can't afford.

Thanks coolbabe for sharing such an important information.

Frontal-thanks for the compliments but it is not "my" quote it is from the movie "incredibles" (my avatar is a clue).

I welcome others to share their thoughts.

let me play the devils advocate. u have a phd - 90/90 for u is as good as a 99/99. and with ur phd and a decent uni prog - ur sure for a good fellowship. 1 yr now doesnt make a big difference. but from a comm progs without reco letters from well known attendings to support u - u might have to sacrifice a yr later to get into a competitive fellowship. if ur in a prog with their own fellowships - then u have the best chance to grab 1.. and never compro on scores. every point counts..

Thanks for that input. I also was wondering if in case I score low (~85) on first step, and good in second (~95), do I qualify for the programs looking for scores in 90s. I mean do they want both scores in that range or your can compensate?

depends on programs. some have definate cutoffs - like 93 on both steps for bridgeport, 98+ for cleveland clinic ohio, etc. others average ur scores. bottom line - do ur utmostest bestest...
