in one fo the examples int he kaplan qbank book it asks about a man who has social phobia. they says he has a fast heart beat and sweats when he needs to talk infront of others and would rather die than say something stupid. what is the best treatment? the answer is a beta blocker for the symptoms, but why would he not be given something for the actual social phobia (like a benzo)? why are the symptoms being treated and not the underlying disease?

There are two approaches in the treatment of social phobias 1. behavioral (social skills training, graduated exposure) 2. medical - social phobias (acute)---->beta-blocker(propranolol,atenolol) before anticipated performance - social phobias (chronic)---->SSRIs(sertraline),MAOIs(phenelzine),benz(alprazol am,clonazepam) I do not know about any identifiable disease (except avoidant personality disorder which is accompanied by social phobia) as a cause of social phobias.
