A 65-year-old woman with breast carcinoma was treated with a partial mastectomy. Which one of the following suggests a better prognosis?

1. recurrent-free in the first 6 months

2. the primary tumor was 2 cm in diameter

3. absence of metastasis in the liver

4. presence of estrogen receptors

5. positivity of only 5 lymph nodes

Thanks

Come on! Stage of breast cancer is the most reliable indicator of prognosis and 2 cm is stage 1 !

Stage of the breast cancer is very important but estrogen receptor site allows hormonal therapy to alter any breast cells that have the potential to become malignant.

The size is very important but in breast cancer, micrometastasis and micro-invasion can not be cured with surgery and hormonal and anti-estrogen therapy have a better prognostic factors.

well said AAAAA..agree with u....smiling face

So do you mean to say that someone with stage 3 and positive ER will have a better prognosis than some with stage 1 and -ve ER AAAAA?

Agree.

After the size and local invasion of the breast cancer, the best prognostic factors would be hormonal receptor positive or negative and grade.

So YOU are right on.

The best answer first is size and then the rest-------->estrogen receptor positive etc.

I think a size 2 cm breast cancer would be Stage 1 and is considered very early stage.

Thanks !

Good points
Small Size is a good prognostic sign indepedently only if it is node (lymph node)negative. Even if it is small in size and node positive , then its not a good prognostic sign...(kaplan)
