Dx relies upon microscopic observation of trophozoites from fresh CSF (or histological sections of CNS tissue) and then Rx with Amphotericin B and miconazole - however, as you probably already know, death occurs within a week in untreated patients

Aha! You were watching "House" tonight nod

Hopefully, you realize that this show is NOT what happens in hospitals in real life....

(I just love it when these docs go in and perform their own tests in empty laboratories with poor lighting and they get results within minutes or seconds...)

Thank you to both of you.

Yes I saw "House" bactittech. Glad you're still here! The boards could ask about someone swimming in a lake or stagnant pond and becoming infected with this particular organism.nod

more info

for naegleria fowleri (foul playing org is protozoa, acts like bacteria and treated with antifungal)

csf shows high neutrophil, low glu, high prot like bact mening but gram stain shows no org and culture grows no bact.

micro shows motile amoeba.

rx with antifungal, intrathecal amphotericin B.

for ACANTHAMEBA

csf exam shows cyst and trophozoite stages.

rx is difficult with many antifungal incl pentamidine.

it causes chronic granulomatous brain infection in immunocompromised ind unlike n.fowleri that causes death within a week.

source...MRS.

yes tolito, good info, thats one reason I asked because its so lethal. Imagine innocently swimming swimming in a lake and expiring in a week.
