Congrats Mazinger!!!

I am and have been a silent follower of this forum. I have failed step one in 1995, 1996 & 1997. I am very scared about the number of attempts left for me. I now have to retry MLE coz the circumstances have changed. I lack confidence and motivation though i want to score high 90s (my last scores were 72, 72 & 72).

I am planning to take step one in Jan 07 and my resources are Kaplan lecture notes and DVDs for Physio, Biochem, Pharma, Micro, Goljan Audio and Rapid review for Patho, High Yields for Anatomy, Neuro, Embryo and Histo. Beh Sc from Kaplan LN + DVD and BRS.

My mcq resources are Kaplan Q bank 7 volumes, Kaplan Q book, Kaplan Step I simulated exam CD, NMS step 1 CD & Underground Clinical vignettes. I have First Aid, Imaging Atlas CD and Web Path CD to supplement. Can you please

1. Tell me how do I design my studies for Jan 2007?
2. Is this stuff enough and ok for the step?
3. Are 7 months enough coz I work 7 hours daily so I will be getting around 8 hours per day?

I hope you will help me in getting out of my old memory flashbacks and concentrate on the road ahead.

Thanking you in advance and congrats once again.

mazinger: thank u for the reassurance! reading everything 4-10 times......wow...........u surely have a lot of patience. no wonder, you did soooooooooo well. but how did you manage to read for 10-14 hours everyday while working full-time? (i think u mentioned somewhere that u were working full-time in a rural area).

Well Zenith, I only had to work for a year... so my job ended 5 months away from my exam so I had plenty of time to study.. I studied for almost 12 to 13 months total...

Dear Disha all of the subjects you just mentioned are extensively covered by kaplan... You are two months away from your test you still have time to get your away around through these. Kaplan and the videos are more than enough for getting stars on each and every topic you just mentioned. Ok physio Dunn and notes, genetics Lionel Raymond, Vernon Reichenbecher and notes, and for pharm be sure you really know physio and biochem b4 starting with pharm. Why? because theres too much overlap between these three; I trully beleive that you can never fully understand pharm unless you have solid bases on P & B.

How are you assesing your knowledge on these three?

Well, on my perspective Genetics and physiollogy are overrated by Qbank (specially genetics), so as I said b4 if you know your books well and still are scoring low on qbank relax the test is easier. Pharm is pretty close to Qbank and from my perspective questions are pretty straight forward so it is very easy to answer if your thoughts are clear. But in order to have clear thoughts you must be good on physio and biochem.

For the anxiety thing do questions, questions and more quiestions simulating the real thing... Try also visiting the prometric center a day or 2 b4 taking the test. I think you can actually pay something and enter and do some mcqs.. Give it a shot..

Give your best

And thx for the inspiration thing of my posts... Im honored and embarrased

Dear old kid, first of all try to start from zero.. I know its hard to erase from your mind all your experiences with the USMLE, but its something from the past and its gone for good.. Remembering stuff from the past will only bring thoughts of sadness and insecurity..Today is a new day and this new day you could start a new begining, start from scratch.

Kaplan is the best source for studying, most of high scores were achieved by people who used kaplan as its main study source.. So, it appears you have the key tools for a succesful preparation.

Your plan should focus on understanding basic mechanisms of common diseases, and the best way to start is with Mol Bio and Biochem.. I really think biochem is the Mother of all step 1 subjects. Best source for biochem Lionel Raymond and notes period! Is better by far compared to Goljans book of biochem, BY FAR! Second subject you should start is Physio and once again Kaplan is the best out there.. After you read and know those two well you can decide on your own what to study next.. But, be aware there are several rules you must follow: NEVER Study pathology without studying micro, Immuno, histo (and of course physio and biochem) As I said be4 FOCUS on mechanisms and if there is a topic or subject you cannot explain to someone else it means you dont know it.. Remember there is always an explanation for everything and Step 1 is just about that.

Good luck in your preparation, put your heart in this and everything will be fine..

7 months is enough if you use your time wisely...

Thanks a lot Mazinger. I had just started off with pathology and it was difficult remembering free radical injury stuff so i guess you are right I should be doing physio and bio first.
