A 60-year-old man involved in an automobile accident suffered multiple long-bone fractures and injury to the pelvis. Two days following his admission, he was found to be febrile with sinus tachycardia and tachypnea, axillary and conjunctival petechiae. He has a PO2 of 64 mmHg.
