24. An obese 62-year-old woman is brought to the emergency department in a coma by emergency medical technicians (EMTs). The EMTs report that she said she had palpitations and double vision before becoming unresponsive 10 minutes ago. A Medic Alert bracelet shows that she has hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus. A number of prescription drugs are found in her purse. Serum glucose concentration is 50 mg/dL. Which of the following drugs is the most likely cause of the hypoglycemia? A ) Acarbose B ) Captopril C ) Digoxin D ) Glyburide E ) Methyldopa D or A? Please discuss/explain. Thanks.

D Virgo: Acarbose and Metformin are two diabetic drugs that do not cause HYPOGLYCEMIA.

D True robin. actually what tells the difference its is mechanism of action .. glyburide blocks k channels and releases high [ ] of insulin .. hence hypoglycemia.

D is right... Sulfonylureas cause Hypoglycemia as a SE. (more common with second generation: glyburide and glipizide) Sulfonylureas also cause disulfiram like rxns (NOT seen with second generation drugs) --So others like tolbutamide and chlorpropamide.
