Hello my brothers and sisters in the battle against Board exams. This is my plan of preparing myself for step 1 exam so can you guys please let me know if it's the right approach that can yield a great score. I basically followed FA's advice on what books to use except Anatomy which I think Kaplan lecture notes is the best. My plan is to study 14 hrs/day for 12 months. Thanks guys and let's keep up the good work of helping each other, this indeed how doctors should be; lending helping hands whenever we can.

if you are planning to study 14 hrs for 12 months it is very likely that you will burn out and lose your steam very early in the game.

Hi

I've been studying for almost a year, for 14 hours a day, and let me tell you, i didn't know anything at the beginning so i had to teach myself everything, I have postponed my exam once. I am so burnt out and trust me u won't remember stuff at all. I would recommend trying to stick with 6-8 months, otherwise u will burn out, believe me. Best of luck.

I second Mavis' statement. The preps shouldn't be longer than 8 months of solid studying. You're only human afterall...

guys, guys, why are you scaring him? he just wanted some assurance that he can do it. even more, every person is individual - the same approach may be working good for one person and be completely unacceptable or unbearable for other.
Thiamine, you just don't need to study for 14 hrs a day for 12 months to get 99 - it can be managed in much less time.
it's very good that you are so enthusiastic and determined about your prep plan - though somewhat unrealistic - it's OK - you are only beginning.

Welcome Thiamine it's perfect that you have 12 hours per day available, try to read as much as you can and you will not need 12 months. There are many different opinions about the books that we should study, just browse the forum for that( but Kaplan, BRS , High yield and Lippincotts, are the favorites). choose one (or maximum 2 books) for every subject and read it at least 3 times, memorise FA and the 99 is yours. Good luck , friend

Hello guys,
I deeply thank you for all your thoughts. Yes indeed my 14hrs/day 12 month period is unrealistic and I knew it but I wanted to generate thoughts and see what people think of this type of unrealistic approach. My feeling was telling me that I would need 8 months 14hrs/day of study to achieve my goal inshaAllah. p53 thanks for suggesting the book list. BTW, before coming to med school, I was planning to do my Masters and PhD on p53 aka: Guardian of the Genome" and i'm actually still interesting to research on this gene after inshaAllah completing my Oncology training. The books you suggested was great, however, knowing myself I don't think I'll be able to complete all of them on time, thus I decided to narrow it down to "one book per course" and here a list of narrowed version of your greatly suggested book list. Can you guys please tell me if this is good enough. I prefer to deal with "one book per course" and know it all than to deal with several books and know little. Thanks guys and GL with your goals.

Materials needed for the prep: As Suggested by p53 and modified by Thiamine

1. Behavioral Science:
***BRS Behavioral Science', by Fadem***

2. Pathology:
***BRS Pathology***

3.Biochemistry+Genetics:
***Rapid Review: Biochemistry***

4. Pharmacology:
***Katzung and Trevor’s Pharmacology: Examination and Board Review', 2004***

5. Physiology:

7. Anatomy:

Hello guys,
Can someone tell me on average how many pages students cover per day 30,40,50,60,70..etc.For 14 hrs study how many pages do you think I should cover if i'm not slow or fast reader but rather average. I mean can read fast when I'm under intense pressure such as the night b4 an exam. Don't worry guys I won't reading the night b4 the board. Thanks.

  #14

well this is a tough questiongrin, it depends a lot on every person, and on first, second, third reading, on matters, mood and babies( for many usmlers)

I would say just that my average is 50 pages/ day, and I never see anybody here studying for 14 hours regularly. Just start your studies and in a week you'll see exactly how much you can read in a normal day.

I recommend reading at least 2 good resources for each subject - this guarantees that every topic that is high yield for the boards will be covered;
why don't you like 'Kaplan Lecture Notes'? they are good (except for pathology) and easy to read and understand.

yes i agree with P53. it is hard to get all the information you need from one text so i use kaplan as my second source. i also find that the pathology is the worst but it remains a good guide all the same.

by the way, P53,i just found out the meaning of your name. kinda neat. i love it. i believe you have matched and i think you are a great person for remaining on step 1 to guide the rest of us.

Thanks guys. I would take your advice. Is it ok then to combine above mentioned books plus Kaplan Lecture Notes b/c this is what I want to do. p53 indeed you are "guardian of student interest" keep it up.
