thanks asmi.

  #4

What is the main difference between the epidural and spinal anesthesia?

  #5

spinal generally refers to subarachnoid level of injecting the drug. So in epidural you pierce the posterior ligamenta flava but when you pull the plunger a little backwards, there is no CSF.

  #6

In spinal anesthesia the needle pierces the arachnoid and site is above the spinous process of L4.
In epidural anesthesia, the needle is inserted through the sacral hiatus(sacral cornua) into sacral canal. Why do we call it as epidural? its because its given in epidural space.

I hope iam giving correct explanation!
If not plz do correct me.

WELL DUDES, HERE YOU HAVE:
Epidural: you can use this technic wherever, I use it at cervical level (to treat pain), but is most frequent to use it at lumbar level, the landmark is the Iliac Crest at L4L5, the aproach by the sacral hiatus is epidural too but is a variant, useful in pediatrc patients to treat hernias or phimosis or undescend testes
SPINAL it has a similar but not the same effects, the main difference is that is very fast onset, low doses, more density solution (Lidocaine 5%) and safety, but it has a higher incidence of headaches
BOTH can cause a severe hipotention if you dont give 10 ml per kg of Saline Solution previously
Signs of intoxication: taste Changes, EKG changes
hope help you
