Hello everyone!! I know this is not the specific forum for this question, but it seems Step 3 forum is kinda quiet these days. As an IMG hoping to get an H-1B visa I´m really confused about Step 3 ...what I understand clearly is that i have to be ECFMG Certified before applying for step 3. But, which are the states that let me take the exam before entering a residency??. I found a list at the FSMB site, and all the states seem to require at least 1 year of posgraduate training ...has> http://www.fsmb.org/usmle_eliinitial.html> ...has this recently changed? I thought that there were some states like Connecticut and New York, which allowed applicants to take Step 3 even before registering for the match. Do I have to pay the licensure fees along with my Step 3 application or do i have to pay them after i pass the test? How long does the process of applying for Step 3 take? What about the elegibility periods? It seems they are assigned and not chosen by applicants, so is there a way or a proper moment to apply if one wants to be assigned a certain elegibility period? I don´t know if I´m making sense ...I would really appreciate some explanations from someone who has already gone through everything or is more advanced than me, specially if he or she is applying or has applied to New York State Board and has gotten an H1B visa. Hope to get some replies.

Rafo, As u said u have to be ECFMG certified before taking Step 3 Yes u can take the exam even before registering into match or joining any residency.I applied for Connecticut state board and passed my exam recently. I think u can apply to New York too but I am not sure. U have to pay around 635$ for step 3 when u apply for the exam I dont know abt licensure. U will be given an eligibilty period around 109 or 110 days from the day u apply. I dont think u have an option of assigning ur required eligibilty period but I am not sure. Good Luck Hope I cleared some of ur doubts

Use connecticut as it is the fastest to approve, then once you get the orange card, you can sit for the exam anywhere in the US. Book your exam center and date using the Thompson website..

u saw the website all wrong. the one year requirement is not for step 3 application, it is for limited license. see the website carefully and u will s ee that there are at least 11 states where u can take step 3 without any training in USA. of course if you trust us, go for connecticut.... good luck

conn rocks dude.. i am an ocd - must have asked tons of people. so if u dont want to reinvent the wheel... btw it doesnt make any difference if u appear from conn and end up doin residency in cali.. the s3 permit is just for s3.. doesnt mean ur gettin a conn license. the license process will be started afresh once u get into residency.. if u decide to apply today - u wont be able to take s3 before 4 weeks starting from today due to processing delays.. simply put - go to fsmb - fill out the inane details - get a printout - get it notarized - send it across.. and lastly but most importantly - hit the books m8 apurva

i did it mine in Houston, Tx, everything was also very fluid and quick, no problem at all. It's another option. Check it in fsmb.org.

Suppose I apply online in November; when will my elegibility period start?

Does the Identity Certification form has to be notirized by a notary in the US? Because there is a line that says County and State where it will be notarized and in my country we don´t have counties nor states.
