Hello eveyone! I am a med student fr Sweden (5th year). I would like to practice medicine in USA. I have gathered alot of information ab usmle and the whole remaining process. I have Kaplan Review Books for step I. Soon I am going to buy access to Kaplan Question Bank. But what I don't know is how good are my chances as an IMG to get into surgery. I would like to do orthopedic surgery but as I have been reading in the forums orthopedics seems to be almost impossible even for US graduates. I don't wanna waste my time and money for nothiong. I have been offered a PhD position in gastroenterology but I am considering to turn it down cus I wanna get prepared for usmle. I need advice! Thx Guyz and Girlz

yes, orthopedics is one of the most competetive residencies, but I guess nothing is impossible - if you'll get 99s on both step 1 and step 2 CK, great USCE and LORs - this will give you very good chances to get residency in the orthopedic surgery - there is no guarantee though. anyway, you are losing only gastroenterology position in your home country, not the orthopedics one; also, it's not impossible to do them simultaneusly - I mean PhD and prep for USMLE.

Hi P53! Let me express my gratitude for ur kind words and great response. I wanna do orthopedics and that's why I wanna have a PhD in related fields. I worked as a reaserch assisstent with a handsurgeon/professor but our research didn't produce sufficient material for a publication besides we didn't get along very well otherwise there was a great chance of getting a PhD position there. Would a PhD in gastroenterology improve my chances of getting into a orthopedics? I was thinking about scoring double 99 and get a surgical priliminary position which might generate LORs and USCE? Does this sound good? Or a preliminary position would only weaken my prospects since I have heard that preliminaries are for people who cant get matched on their present qualifications for a regular residency prog? Is that true? Thx
