Hi everyone I`ve graduated from med school in 2004 and finished my 1 year internship back home in 2005 . Now i`m in US doing my MPH and planning to take the step 1 in this August . Sometimes I feel like taking all the exams (Step1, 2ck and cs) in a row and trying my luck in 2007 post match scramble !! But anyways, I`ve decided to keep this journal to motivate myself so that I can at least be done with step 1 by the end of this summer . I`ve done Physiology for once (kaplan and BRS neurphysiology) and now using BRS and Goljan`s audio and notes for pathology. Hoping to finish patho by Saturday . will update tomorrow .

BRCA, Welcome to this forum and welcome to the world of USMLE. You can achieve all your aims. I wish I can go back in time to where you are now. I myself am an MPH graduate (took MPH rather seriously, got A's in all courses whereas my friends who didn't care about MPH got all C's in all courses but completed USMLE and moved onto residency, I am still stuck with USMLE!!!). Then, I graduated and as I am growing away from being young, I married, now have a kid. Sometime in between I had to find a job because I was completing MPH and with a job - USMLE is very very tough to finish which I am bent on to do now. Hope this serves as a lesson to you. If you are in MPH, don't care about it. Get on with USMLE. If you have finished most courses and MUST graduate, delay it citing some reasons and prepare for USMLE. If possible take a semester break and complete one step in your home country. Do the best not to join in a job with your MPH. It looks like you can earn some $$$$ (which are almost 1/4 $$ of what my friends who completed residency are earning!) but it does not allow you to get time to prepare for Steps!!! I am not trying to be nosy here but if my life would serve as a lesson to you, then I would be glad!

BRCA1 good luck with prep and if your screen name is any indication..you must be good at repairing breaks in studies... You are a fresh graduate (I did in 95 and finished PhD) But I disagree little with coolguy. Just like him, I have friends who directly went to residency programs and right now are making some major bucks. I instead finished my PhD genuinely..and I do not regret it. Yes, I am little late on many fronts of life but I know I have acheived something that is always valid. After all hard work and residency you screw up a single case and your license could be in jeapordy and you dont have means to earn.. Additional degree will work as a parachute. You will not have to worry for your livelihood in anytime of your life. I know for residency programs research and additional qualifications hardly matters but I do think good programs care. So if you are going to have GC/citizenship it will help you much more to get into good programs. So prepare well but dont neglect your current program.. that was my 2 cents.

Thank you Sachida, cool guy and general malaise for the encouragement. I can very well understand what you went thru cool guy because it was my first semester in here ( almost over now ) and I couldnt help putting efforts to the MPH-assignments and studies and all, may be ts because I`m a stickler or something, but evidently, my study for the steps were interrupted Now that I need to work to get my tution waived, I`m really confused which way to go. Should I join kaplan for 1 year and get done with my exams and then get back to MPH again until I match or should I continue this work-study(MPH)-STUDY(steps)!!! Dont you worry cool guy. God doesnt give anyone with both hands. MD, MPH is pretty fatal combination nowadays .. so you`ll definitely get into good programs. Anyways, Que sera sera ... all I have to do now is to nail the Step 1 this summer ! Thank you once again guys! I really appreciate your suggestions.

Okay, I changed my schedule and decided to revise physio before doing patho. Did Renal and respiratoy and the general topics(section 1) yesterday . And skeletal & cardiac Muscle, circulatory, excitable tissue today. All from kaplan with Dr. Dunn`s lecture. Wont sleep unless I finish GIT ! Tomorrow (Hopefully !!) I`d do Reproductive and Endocrine and Neurophysiology. Pretty lofty plan coz I`ve got classes. But i HAVE to ! Go for it BRCA1 !!!!

It WAS a lofty plan indeed ...I stayed up and finished GIT but woke up so late that had time only to finish my homework and had to run to class I`ll give it a try tonight. Tomorrow is the only bonus day for Physio...not more than that. Hope I can complete the first reading by May 20th.

good job brca. yes it is tough to carry on 'normal' life and study for usmle at same time esp when there are distractions. God will help you make the right decision concerning your mph but do not rush the usmle. i was advised that it is best to give it your best shot the first time. GL
