I read from BRS that hypotonic fluid loss and gain causes RBC to shrink and swell respectively to maintain the hematocrit (percentage of RBC volume in the blood). But in hypertonic fluid loss and gain ... RBC volume (hematocrit) increases and decreases ... why is that?

Any input is appreciated

Hypotonic fl loss increases the ECF osmolarity. which causes the RBC to shrink. Hypotonic fl gain decreases the osmo of ECF which causes the RBC to swell.

Hypertonic fl loss decreases the ECF osmolarity which causes the RBC to swell and vice versa.
