I was just browsing thru various program webpages...and I noticed something very confusing:

Most of the good programs do not prescribe a minimum score on the USMLEs...but talk of a wholistic profile as what they are looking for...

Many of them even go to the extent of syaing, "scores of our candidates matching last yr were between 83 and 90..or high 80s to low 90s...."(almost exact, wor for word quotes)..

Many go on to prescribe...USCE desired, but not essential...USLOR desired but not essential...etc. etc.....

So, my disturbing question is this...APPARENTLY MANY , yes MANY IMGs will satisfy these requisites..infact...from what I hear...90 is commonplace for IMGs,,,,and that you are no good if you dont have a 90 min (slightly extreme, I believe)..but still, you hear of people with high 90s...94, 95, etc...NOT MATCHING....THIS STUMPS ME BIG TIME!!

Its not that these guys are applying to very competitive programs...the programs I quoted initially ARE THE MOST COMPETITIVE ONES!!!

Its also not that there is a deluge of guys with 95 and above...otherwise we would have the mean of the USMLEs set there...

And we never, NEVER hear anything from the section that scores between 80 and 89..about where they applied...where (if anywhere) they matched.....somebody suggested that many people report "infalted" scores on such forums...I dont think that actually might be happening .....

If there is a flaw...and I am praying that there might be one...in this reasoning...please, PLEASE do point it out...I have failed to find any answers to this dilemma...

Any inputs/insights?

Mean for the recent US/Can registrants - first time USMLE step 1 takers (not IMGs) is 216/88,
Mean for the recent US/Can registrants - first time USMLE step 2 CK takers (not IMGs) is 220-89,
see my post about IMGs:

It could be and this is just speculation, that the fmgs with green cards/citizenship are matching...whereas those that do need a visa are having a much much harder time and are not matching despite higher scores. but this is just a guess

The total package means
1. Scores
2. USCE
3. VISA status
4. Uni of graduation
5. Interview performance.

There are many people with scores in the 80s that match.
Your VISA status do play a big role as sponsoring visa will cost them money.

But a FMG that need a visa do match as well it all depends on the interview performance. Good scores does not mean automatic entry. It means lots of interview calls but it all boils down to your personality and how the interview goes. THAT IS THE DECIDING FACTOR.
