Hi Freinds, I am a mom...and have just started with my prep for Step1. One thing that always keeps on distracting me is the thought that all my efforts are going to go waste. Even if I do pass these exams I will never get a residency position owing to the fact that I have been totally out of medicine for 10 years. Freinds..give me a genuine advice...do I have any chance left or is my career already dead.

Hi old_grad, dont let your date of graduation or bring out of contact with medicine bother you. I graduated in 1996 and I was also quite intimidated by the whole process and the fantastic scores people are getting these days. Please know that if you set your mind to it and work towards it, it is possible to get good scores in USMLE. Do get the exams out of the way as I am sure you will get a residency position if not immediately, after a couple of years of Externship/ Research/ Publications etc. All the very best to you!

Hi old_grad, I am an older graduate too and it is true that after such a long gap, the chances of getting into a residency are lesser but there are success stories and whenever you put in your heart and soul into something, the results will always be good. Remember when one door closes, another opens!

I am also an old graduate from 1994 and now after settling my life I am back to medicine. I just started a week ago and I am still working full time. I am sure getting residency won't be as smooth as for fresh graduates but you have to believe that you can make things happen and you be amazed to see the results from your own efforts. Thanks to this forum, it really got me going and I hope the same for you. Good luck and be intouch Nadeem

i am also an old graduate. am scared to write my year of grad cos i bet it is probably the oldest so far..1989., this forum has also encouraged me cos there are quite a number of us out there and we hear their success stories. it may be tough but it is possible. the one advise though is for one to score really high at every step. that tends to help us in matching. but it will not be a bad idea for you to find an observership in ANY clinic in ANY specialty cos it counts as experience for you. of course you will not be paid for it. also you may be able to get references from them. ( this is if you are in america at the moment). otherwise, in your own country get any job and get some clinical skills back so that CKS will be easy for you. good luck.
