hi all usmle gurus,

I've observed that most usmle takers read around 100 kaplan notes pages/day & do 2-3 hrs Qs

how u people r able to read 100 kaplan pages in a day?Do u just browse thru pages or read seriously ?R u able to memorise at such "high" speed of reading;-) Or I'm too slow in reading?

Even in my second reading of kaplan notes,i can barely read 30-40 pages/day.I'm studying full time.

any suggestions.

yes, you should read faster - it's essential!
some recent researchs have shown that when you are reading rapidly, this signals your brain that it has only restricted amount of time and should memorise quickly. this forces your brain to take and to store information rapidly.
how can you achieve this? of course, it doesn't mean that you should skip pages! you just should think faster and don't think about other things during reading - think about info you are reading.

I think it varies from person to person. A friend of mine who got a 99 in both steps could only manage 10 pages a day. Myself, if I made 30 pages during my first read, I considered it a lot. p53, I think common sense dictates that speed-memorizing is effective for short bursts of time. Surely the mind can't keep up with such a pace for 8-10 hours a day?

I think with mental work your brain consumes energy, there must be a lapse time; period of rest, to regain your power of mental concentration. The best thing is to read for one hour and rest for 10 minutes then after 4 hours take an hour of rest. You may divide your study to morning and evening sessions.

Best of luck.

whats the big deal. it doesn,t matter how many pages r u doing in a day if u did 20 pages with proper understanding its worth 100 pages with only a quick glancesnod

personally, i read everything fast and i read everything my eyes fall on like stuff at the back of the cereal box etc etc. it is a habbit. it takes reading often to learn to read. so the more you read (anything) the easier it is to read what you have to read. for sure if we read fast like P53 says, you will miss out on details the first time, but i bet you the second time, you get all the details. and the third time you have it all sealed. a couple days before the exams you can go over every single note you made. and probably read FA twice again. the advantage of reading fast becomes obvioud in that you will have gone thro every single stuff at least once. if you go slowly, you may nothave the time to read everything even once. it is not easy to memorise at the same time you are reading so the way to read fast is not to attempt to memorise first time and then during second reading you try to memorise. try this you will be surprised how much you have actually retained. this is teh concept P53 is talking about. but at the same token, do what feels right for you. you obviously made it thro med school with your 'slow' speed. slow and steady wins the race. GL.

well usmle gladiator u took my doubt into words. i am also amused by hw people read 100 pages a day plus Qs!!! for me im in my first read and some days i do read 40 pages but what happens is after doing such an effort for may be 2 days by brain seems like shut downfor may be 1 day or even 2 days.no matter hw hard i try i cant study. i observed this for 1 or 2 months then i understood doing 20-25 pages everyday steadily is better than doing 40+ pages and then not reading for another couple of days. so there r personal variations. if u r a fast reader u r blessed otherwise u compensate...... isn't it?

humble request.....pls give some suggestions u fast readers about hw u do it.......like hw many pges/hr and hw many hrs per day hw many revisions a week....esp physio graphs and biochem pathways!!!!!

If you did much efforts in the first reading, it will make you so fine during your second reading. As you have already had mastered everything even if it vaporized from your brain. So, I am with those who said that putting efforts in 20 pages per day is better than just flying over more pages and waiting for the second reading which may need a third one. Best of luck for all of us.
