thank you all so much..well mavis asked a good questionsmiling face..My q bank scores were average 33/50.all tests I took showed a score from 65 to 70 on average..The thing here is that for all the new comers to look at the scores of each and every test u take...u will find the scores really consistent and will correlate to what u will get actually. All my tests showed I will score between 80 to 85 except nbme I retook.so I cannot expect a 90 if I am not at that level of my preparation.so u kind of can guess where u stand and if u have time and u have the right circumstances, try to improve..if u r getting a 65 on q bank, try to work hader and arleast get a 70.I just want to say, dont make compromises on usmle.if u can afford to be in the library the whole day,if u can afford to study all night...avail that time and try to get a 90 score.for the matter of 600 dollars, donot get an 80,when with a month of extra effort u can hit a 90.

what I have figured out is that

1.add 20 points to your q bank average.Mine was almost 65 and I got an 84.

2.nbme form 2 is more realistic so keep it for the end of your preparation...and also if u get good score on nbme, take the test within a week or so..even if u have to pull the exam date earlier,do so..donot let the knowledge evaporate.

3.usmle cd has no correlation with the actual exam..I had a 75% on it....totall bull shit.so dont jump around if u get a 100% correct on that.but do solve the qs.I had many repeats.

4.if u have good friends, not the internet but whom u can meet in person like class fellows, seniors etc.....write down the qs from recent exam takers..What I have observed is that in a particular week or three weeks time, they give almost same test to a group or two.so u might get the exact exam as your friend and if u know the answers ,it will add points.but donot do it on intrenet..as u dont want to be in trouble.

Good luck guys and thank u.smiling facesmiling facesmiling face

I would firstly like to publically congratulate my wife Malinda smiling face She worked extremely hard and truly deserved an excellent score in her circumstances. Despite the credit she has given me... credit really goes to her... her perseverence and hard work has paid off!!!! I look forward to another battle... step 2 and know she can score very well.

For those who are still preparing YOU CAN DO IT. A couple of pointers I can give despite the fact that I'm an engineer brought up in the west but half a doctor by now sticking out tongue

1) Believe in yourself. Say "I WANT TO AND I CAN" every day... every time your feeling down... every time you feel the stress is at it's peak.... every time the devil inside you is saying give up. The phrase comes from problem solving techniques taught in engineering schools in the west. As simple and silly as it sounds the phrase does miracles... and has done while I was in engineering school, when I got into a motorcycle accident several years ago... and when I was told I had cancer (turned out to be a neurofibroma).

2) Schedule - Keep working on a schedule. Start with a target month to give the exam and work from there. First reading should not take more than a month. Final prep no more than 1-2 months.

3) Identify your weaknesses as soon as possible. Most of you fear from giving any type of diagnostic test fearing the result. At worst go through your first reading and then give a comprehensive diagnostic test (NBME form 1, simulated exam).

4) Once you've identified your weaknesses change sources if required. Once you've seen improvements (take subject wise tests) by changing sources stick to it.

5) Focus on what matters most. You guys know the published content and keep focussing on it. Follow the 80/20 rule. If you are not able to improve in one area e.g. biochem then move to other areas where you can improve. Don't bog yourself down.

6) After your first reading.... start Q bank and use it as a learning tool... do not worry if you don't score well. Complete it atleast once.

7) Final two months of prep are paramount. Work into a two week review schedule and keep focusing on your weaknesses. After every two week cycle give randon tests to see where you stand.

8) As my wife said, NBME is an excellent predictor of your scores. Select the appropriate times to give the test wisely. I would recommend only form 1 and 2. Forms 3 and 4 are relatively new and I believe is more experimental and can also demotivate you quickly because of less than expected results.

9) How do you know your ready? First sign is if you can narrow your choices down to two answers your about ready for the exam. Secondly if your consistently scoring 80+ on your tests (Q bank, similated exam etc.) your ready. Thirdly if you score 400 plus on form 1 or form 2 (preferred) you are ready.

10) Lastly relax before the exam. Those that did not clear the exam despite 9) I believe overexhausted themselves the night before. If you have fear of exams... I mean serious either blank out etc. I urge to go through the mock exam offered at your center. It will help significantly.

Well that's all for now. May Allah bless you all with great scores!!!!

wow!

It is very amazing. You know much better about this exam than me.I belive malinda will score even higher in step2 b/c she has you by her side.Thank God for good husbands.

When I get frustrated about this exam my husband, who is not a physician, always tell me 'It is only in your mind.....if you tell your self that you can do this you will do it.We are what we think we are'.

God bless you.

desimd,

Don't worry you did well. Note most people who took nmbe form 3 experienced a drop in their scores. All other factors point to a good score InshAllah.

you have been a strong pillar of support for malinda. it is very obvious. we have heard such good remarks about you and we all thank you for being there for her.
