I remember reading an article about drug users selling Cipro on the street. Drug addicts only take part of a dose and end up with S. aureus - resistant to Cipro! Apparently this phenomenon has led to wide spread resistance of S. aureus to Cipro.
There's also articles lately talking about widespread use of Levofloxacin (another quinolone) possibly contributing to the rise in MRSA (methicillin resistant Staph. aureus) as apparently docs like to throw Levo and Cipro at anything and everything. The drug companies have done their job, apparently. Some hospitals are limiting use of Levofloxacin or taking it off the formulary all together. Check with your local micro lab as to current percent resistance for specific organisms to these drugs.
