A newborn infant requires repeated resuscitations in the delivery room because of failure to breathe and cyanosis. During spells of crying, which appear to alleviate the cyanosis, his breath and heart sounds are normal, as is direct laryngoscopy. Vigorous respiratory movements appear ineffectual. Immediate management of this infant consists of which of the following? <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> 1) obtaining a chest x-ray 2) obtaining an ECG 3) arterial blood gas determinations 4) inserting an oropharyngeal airway 5) administration of naloxone

5 is the correct answer. Why? Mom=given narcotic med during labour=depressed respiration also 5 is easy to do, to do=do something

The answer is undoubtebly 4. As has already been stated this is choanal atresia. This is very typical and a likely Q on the boards. The other way this is asked is a baby who gets cyanotic while feeding (eg. sucking and swallowing).
