yes, you can take it before starting residency but only in some states. You must check www.fsmb.org to check the states i told you. For example: Texas, Connecticut allow you.
1.5 months can be enough for this exam (this is even more true if you did well in step 2CK, if you've had clinical experience somewhere) to pass it, if you just wanna pass it, it's ok and you'll do it. If you wanna get a 99 or something similar, then it varies too much depending on each person, and maybe you would need more time (for instance 3-4 months at least)
