Hi everyone. I am currently at med school at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm Sweden (3rd year). I am thinking of maybe trying to do my residency in the US but I am hesitating when I read about all the struggle you have to go through... What kind of scores do you think one have to have in order to integrate a decent program in Internal Medicine? (If you have three months of US clinical experience but no publications) Once I have completed my residency, will I be sure of getting a job in America? Do you think it is an advantage or disadvantage to be from Sweden when you apply for residency? (Maybe US hospitals are more used to Indian IMGs and therefore prefer them...)

Hi Dr. Sweden, given that you are graduating from the Karolinska Institute I would say your chances are excellent. The Karolinska is world-famous institute with excellent physicians. There are many Scandinavians in the U.S. Hospitals. The most important thing is to have a strong letter of recommendation by person who has impact on ranking list. More than likely, if you work hard and you are liked they will take you. The Cleveland Clinic is very IMG friendly in all fields, not just internal medicine. I would suggest doing a month or two rotation, longer if possible there or in place you really want to be. Good luck!

Hi Mia, Thanks for your reply. What is your background? Are you a US resident? How come you have heard of the Karolinska Institute? Mia sounds pretty Swedish to me, are you Swedish yourself? Unfortunately I will not be able to do a rotation in Cleveland. The Karolinska Institute has an exchange program with some American med. schools where Swedish students may do clinical clerkships for three months. By the way, is a clinical clerkship the same thing as an externship? Where would you suggest IŽd do my clerkship? (Choose from the list below) I have talked to some guys who went to Vanderbilt for three months and they were pretty impressed, but I guess it would be really hard to get a residency there, so maybe IŽd better go to a less reputated school? Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York Baylor College of Medicine, Houston Brown Medical School, Brown University University of Iowa University of Minnesota, Minneapolis Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Tulane University School of Medicine UCLA School of Medicine Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California (USC) Vanderbilt University School of Medicine

Well you have very good choices there but I suggest you go for Baylor or Brown. Ucla would be a great choice but I believe you must be a permanent resident or citizen to be able to doa residency in California. I am not sure but I'll let you know when I do.
