Thank you Gabriel, you are right, thank you for your advice. I also just found out that to apply for the california status letter I need to have all my scores, so I guess if I want to apply for CA I am going to "a fuerzas" wait for 2008 match. Unless I decide not do apply in CA, well, anyway it seems that I am going to have to make the final decision once my step 1 score is here. Thanks a million and best of luck to you in your residency!, God bless you and your family. Yolanda

Hi, Gabriel! Your experience is amazing and encouraging. Congratulations for your stength to overcome all the difficulties! I am also an IMG, graduated in 1999, and currently preparing to go to US, for step 2 CS. I have clinical experience in my native country (residency in neurology) and the score I got in step 1 exam is 257/99. Still waiting for step 2 score, hoping to be good. My dream is to enter in a residency position in neurology in US - I love this science. But I'm afraid that I enter in the category of old graduates and I've noticed that an observership in US is almost a must to be accepted as a resident. How can I apply for an observership position, could you advice me?

DrD: Having such an excellent score and a previous residency puts you in an excellent position to be able to have a residency. I wish you get also a very good Score in Step 2. For observership opportunities start checking the teaching hospitals in your area, check on their websites, they sometimes list that as continued education or something similar, Visist the Neurology department and Ask the secretaries, they will know. In Miami, FL, for example the Mount Sinai HOspital offers a 3 month Observership in several services, is fairly easy to apply and get a spot, most of the people that has gotten into programs in that hospital went that way, you can get the info on their web site and they are listed as "mini-residency program" the last for 3 months. This is just an example, there should not be much difference in other places. Gabriel.

Guys, thank you for your kind words, sorry I have been absent this week, since I was doing the huge paperwork load of getting into residency, this is as daunting as the exams themselves. shilahk: Thank you for your words, I got into general Surgery. Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami, FL Seri: Wow, December..... I have always said that it is a must to be in the NRMP as soon as they open in mid June. However, you do not need to have all your exams done and reported to sign in. For the last year there was about 15% of the programs in which the deadline was already passed in the begining of December, so check well in advance which programs will accept your application with scores pending and apply ASAP. Good Luck! Gabriel

hi gabriel, i just got my score for step 1 the past memorial day, not a score i wanted :87/213. i had so many excuses but i should have done better if i wasn't so nervous on that day: i started 5 months ago but had my baby 2 months before the exam day (i prepared during my pregnancy, have to pump milk on that day, have another "terrible 2" daughter who's always glued to my leg, had a full time job so i had to quit my job first 3 months ago then looking for a new job during my last 2 wks before exam, since i have to go back to work after the exam-- i just couldn't afford a life without a job with 2 babies to feed. i'm not sure you'll be back here or not since you've been a MD in its true means now. but your story has already encoraged me! right after i got my score, i wasn't sure if i should move forward or not since i was told IMGs have to score high to win the chances for residency. i haven't done well for the first step and i even don't speak english well. that's why i am here to seek help, from people like you. thank you again for sharing your story with us.

ps. i'm an old IMG also. graduated in 1996. I'm 34 already, far from 51 though. by the year i'll be ready to apply to residency, it'll be 12 years after medical school. my goal for step 2 is the end of this year for CK and feb 2007 for CS.

Gabriel, your post is so useful for many of us IMGs. You mentioned you've obtained a 'House Physician' position in a Hospital in Miami. Which hospital was it, exactly? was it the Jackson Memorial? Your post is very encouraging! Thanks again

Gabriel wrote: Dr. Littlerock, Thanks for your words, I was through very dark moments during the process of getting the residency. Do not give up, in cases like yours it helps a lot to start doing practice questions, get a qbank in whatever company of your choice and start, reading the questions and the explanations for the answer help a lot persons that are not very fast USMLE learners, it helps you get up to speed, of course, the majority of the time would be devoted to read your books, but with the questions is easier to diggest material. So try it an hour a day for the next month you will see the results. I guess people wonder why I seem to know about what's best for this and for that, the reason is because for the las three years, I have shared with at least a 20 maybe more people who are IMGs preparing for their exams, most of them have gotten their licenses in that time, there are some that keep on repeating the same mistake, and have not made much progress, and there are some, like my wife, who after a bad start, have started to make modifications on the way they approach the exams and have made significant changes. I don't assume to know everything, I work in a hospital with a very high number of IMGs holding different possitions, from Flebotomists, and Monitor Techs, to House Physicians, research fellows and surgical assistants, currently there are more than 50 IMGs at my hospital. And in these years, I have seen a lot. I will not disclose full names, but I can tell you that I have seen cases, like Dr. GG, he is 51 years old, was a great Internal Medicine Physician in his Country, Scored on the Upper 80s in Step 1, 92 in Step 2, he was offered a Prematch Family Practice position at a very important Hospital in Illinois, now he is about to start his second year of residency. There is also, Dr. F. L. More than 13 years after his graduation, Failed the exams, once, all of them, he is one of my colleages at the hospital, and will be working until next tuesday because he got a position in Pediatrics in a hospital in NY prematch. I have also mentioned the case of the two other guys that matched for surgery one of them has more than 5 years after his graduation. Dr. K. Q. This case is really encouraging, more than 10 yrs after his graduation, took the steps several times, EACH. after having his ECFMG Certificate, he worked for 1 year at a Teaching hospital in my city, and was accepted this year for the program of Internal Medicine, will be starting in June. I see there is no hard coded rule, that define who gets a residency and who does not, people that fails, always fail because they gave up, nothing else. my theory is that, like most things in this country, everything is set to test your commitment, this persons I have mentioned had something in common: they set their goal, they did not give up, they always believed. Fellow Img, do the same, keep on, you will get your residency, I am sure about that. Gabriel I admire your encouragement for all of us IMG's. I am a 34 yr old graduate from med school 8 yrs ago and finished my residency in another country in 2004 and even became chief ressident. I decided to come here to the US to try my luck on what I love doing and that is providing care to patients. Back in the country where I grew up in (i was born in the US), i enjoyed my job alot as a physician. Last year 2005, I took my step 1 and failed. I decided to take step 2 ck and failed. My step 2 ck results came in the mail and it is truly depressing. I presently work as a surgical asst in ophthalmology and you can imagine how burned out you can be when you do the same thing everyday while studying for your boards. I really feel down right now. i don't know where to start, when to begin applying for matching. Much more, I find it difficult to start all over reviewing but I really want to do this without quitting my job because it provides my finances for the exams and everything else. Dr. Ruiz, keep up this good work you are doing by contiunuosly inspiring others. Glad to hear more from you on this forum.

Year of Grad: 2005, Interupted med school twice due to financial reasons. 6 months Research Experience in handsurgery fr Sweden, without any publications. No papers to varify it. Might be able to track down my supervisor and ask for a LoR. Step 1 score: 262/99 first attempt Step 2 CK score: 259/99 first attempt Step 2 CS : Passed first attempt. 6 months of USCE in a university hospital in USA, from where I have 3 very strong LoRs. No US citizenship or Green Card or any other Visa. Residency of desire at a University or University affliated Hospital: 1. Orthopaedic Surgery 2. Vascular Surgery 3. Radiology 4.
