Hi everyone! I am a medical student , currently in my final year(mbbs).. I have been a silent watcher of this forum for the past month or so cause i am very interested in taking part in the usmle exams. However it seems that there are many people here who pass the exams with not so bad results and who dont get admitted to any residency program... I am interested in IM and was wondering if you guys could honestly tell me what scores i should get in step 1 and 2 for me to get a community or university program in IM..... Thanx a lot in advance!! P.S please tell me the actual scores i should have ( like 90/90,etc)

It's not just scores - although that's a large part of it. You can have 99/99, but if you don't interview well, it's not going to help you. You need the best scores that you can get and you need to practice interview skills. Applicants need to learn that it's not just what you know, but how you "fit" into a program.

Thanx a lot 4 answering so quickly bbb! Correct me if i am wrong but that would mean that i need not have very high scores ( say around 85-90) to get into a residency program if i kind of know how to 'sell' myself to the program coordinator right? And one more thing, i was thinking of getting into a transitional program for 1 year so as to get some usce and then apply to a more competitive program...... Are transitional programs easier to get into? Thanx a lot for clarifying things for me guys!!

i . those scores can be enough (as a part of your application)+interview skills (includes english proficiency)+Curriculum+visa+etc. i don't think transitional programs are easy to get.

Sorry, I can't. There are too many variables when it comes to applying for residency and interviewing. The scores need to be the best that you can get. Do they need to be 99?? Well it can't hurt! But, I would rather have a doctor with a personality and bedside manner that received an 85 than one that is awkward dealing with the personal side of patient care who scored a 99. You have to "fit" with the patients that you take care of, with the residents in your future program.

I've been a program coordinator in three different hospitals in Internal Medicine since 1988 (scheisse, I can't be that freaking old ). And everytime I think that I have seen everything there is to see with residents, something else comes along. It's a great job, my co-workers change everything three years - and many of them keep in touch with me. I love my job. Good luck.

Somewhere in my family history, a Frenchman fought with Washington in the Revolutionary war. I consider myself Canadian (part of my family came over as indentured servants from Norway and then snuck across the Canadian border years ago) or Scandinavian with German roots. In other words, I am a little of most things: French, German, Scot, English - looking at that I guess that I am European. But working with residents for eons (and three years in Germany), I have learned a few words in many languages. Including all those bad ones......
