A total of 10,000 Vietnam veterans, half of whom are known by combat records to have been in areas where Agent Orange was used and half of whom are know to have been in areas where no Agent Orange was used, are asked to give a history of cancer since discharge. This scenario best illustrates which one of the following?

1) case series report

2) case-control study

3) clinical trial

4) cohort study

5) case report

Agreed. Case-control

  #7

determine , are you saying that this is acase control? how can it be true? case control goes back ward in time while cohort goes foreward. this is clearly a cohort study.please clarify

agree with srf...it looks more like a retrospective cohort study to me.

You are right srf and achilles. It should be cohort. It looks like I`m totally confused sad

case control study

I did cohort studies. Cohort studies are "go-forward"

Case control studies "go-backforward"

Definitely a cohort study.

In a case control study you already know the cases...and those are what you follow back in time.We have a history of exposure in this instance and are following the exposed and the nonexposed forward in time to see if they developed the cancer.

definitely its a cohort study !! period.

ok guys, now I'm again confused."are asked to give a history of cancer since discharge" so it doesn't go forward, not a cohort?

  #15

Cohort studies are longitudinal and prospective and forward : you follow two groups of patients, or doctors or nurses and one receive aspirin and the other not.

You DO NOT know anything what happened to them and follow them 20 years down the road to see who develops what and who does not develop cancer.

This question is about exposure to Agent Orange and development of cancer (many different kind of cancer)

They want to know if those exposed to Agent Orange developed more cancer (higher prevalence rate) than those who did not.

Remember, both groups develop cancer. But does Agent Orange group developed more basal cell carcinoma, GI cancer and lung cancer than the group not exposed to Agent Orange.

This is a "going back" backwards question/research to compare one group that have exposed to Agent Orange compared with a matched group that did not.

So it is a CASE CONTROLSTUDY!

case cotrol study

The answer is 4.
This is a cohort study, an example of a retrospective cohort when you go back to define the 'exposure' status, then you go forward in years to see the 'case' status (“a history of cancer since discharge”). Ideally, this is possible only if you have excellent information about the exposure status.
Now, if you first select cancer and non-cancer cases and ask them information about their combat area, this will be a case-control study and will require fewer participants (not 10 000).

This is a retrospective cohort study because one starts with the exposure agent Agent Orange and then determines whether there is an increase in disease when compared to a control.

Case control studies start with the disease and go backward to try and find a common exposure or causation agent for the disease. So one would search through medical records for people with a certain disease such as lung cancer and then determine whether there is a common variable or exposure that led to the disease such as smoking.

nod This is absolutely a cohort study, guys
