I am an IMG scores 83/89. I was denied Visa for USA 4 times in 2004, so i moved to UK. I am currently doing training in Emergency medicine/Orthopaedics here in UK and have 2 years back home experience in Surgery. I am applying for US Visa again this year for Step 2 CS, Step 3 and 2007 Match. With my scores and experience, does anyone feel I have a chance in emergency medicine/Internal medicine residency for 2007. I have been looking at posts on this forum about places where IMGs have recieved interview calls from but none of these ppl are IMGs with scores in 80s. So what happens to people with scores in 80s? Can anyone please give me an idea of IMG friendly places for IMGs with my scores in IM/Emergency Med. Also, I am planning to come to US for Step 2 CS ( provided Visa) in October 2006. I will be on leave for 21-25 days in November 2006... is this sufficient time for possible interviews, if i post my application as soon as ERAS launches? Or will some one suggest the possible time i should definitely give for possible interview calls. Mind you, I am still working in UK and cant just leave everything in the middle w/o any certainity. Thanks in advance for replies

Hi....There are no set mathematical rules as to what scores land you in what residencies...Indeed in 2005-06 season, many second attempts matched into programs with 80s while some 90s did not match...the whole profile of the candidate along with interview performance matters ! So dont feel that you dont have a chance - what you should do is give a whole-hearted attempt. Again , interviews have no set date..the program directors screen the best candidates , as per their scale, and call them for interviews..of these some may cancel interviews, while some may NOT accept prematches , prompting the program directors to call the next batch of candidates for interviews..until they are sure they have done enough to ensure full seats What I am trying to say is that you may very well get interviews upto the end of Jan too ! So , as you right said, do apply very early ....have compiled more tips at : Tips4Match.blogspot.com to help you understand what things count. Hope that will help you.. g/l

THanks for the reply. I have seen your website.. it is really helpful. I do know that the interviews are till January, but I will have a job to attend to in UK at that time, unless i take compassion leave or something on top of my annaul leave. Lets see how many interviews i will get. Btw.. your website does not have any info on couple match.. any light on that?

Moozy - couples matching works. We matched with two sets of couples in IM this year (all IMGs) and 1/2 couple (one person in IM and the other in ER). It works.

Thats a good news... but did these couples have score in 80s. I have heard if one of the partners has both scores in 90s then couple has a good chance, but with both ppl in 80s, it is bleak....I scored 83/89 and my other half has 84/85.. You think we will have a chance in decent community hosp, univ affiliated IM /EM program? Btw...just out of curiosity.... why would a trust want to employ a couple? ... does it help a program in anyway??? it is certainly good for couples though

Why not - if both persons are working in a single program they are happier because they are with their family. Total in my program, I have 5 other couples. Scores are never going to be exactly the same, so if one is higher and one is lower, but they seem that they will be a good fit - it's a good thing. Good luck.

hey bbb, should one tell the PD during interviews that one is going for a couple's match, if the partner is in a different speciality? what are the pros and cons of telling and hiding the fact from the PD

Sure, you can tell the PD - it's also on the ERAS application - a place for the partner's name and specialty. There is no reason not to tell the PD that I can think of.
