yes i agree with bharat and katzung, people in spr numbers are not affected that much, but remember spr training lasts 5 years and i know atleast few of my friends who are still in permit free whilst doing their second or third year spr jobs, that means even if they go on HSMP it will be 5 years before they get pr and 7 years before they get british passport and by that time, not only that NHS would have disintegrated but also consultant posts hard to come by,except in geriatrics.

Yes next year will be tougher, but it will only get tougher as dayz goes by,so do it now rather than in 2008.

good luck all.

it has to start somewhere, it has to start sometime

what better place than here.. what better time than now

- rage against the machine

competition has always been fierce. when u entered secondary school - u were the best in ur state. when u entered med college u were the best in ur country. now its time to just be the best in the world. step up to the challenge folkssmiling face

i have always likened all docs to atheletes. gosh why arent there any cerebral olympicswink

another stupid theory i have is that the best - wil always be the best. if u were good back home - u will be good here. if u were good in india/uk (like katz, phoenix) - u will be good in usa, india aus...mars

and just as in the past there are too many stellar candidates to compete with.. so just compete with urself..

bring it on

INSIDE STORY FROM UK DOCTOR

I am a doc doing Emergency Medicne job in UK. I have Higher Skilled Migrant Visa and also have a job for the next 1 year. I did my Steps in 2004 but was denied visa for US 3 times from my home country(Pakistan). For the past 1 year, I have been working in UK and now I am about to apply for USA Visa again. I plan to appear in Step 2 CS in October and 2007 match. It is true that the situation is getting worse in UK and 'an undocumented law' has formally been documented now about employing IMGs. But on the same side this is also a fact that hospitals are still considering people with Higher Skilled Migrant Visa and Spousal Visas as EU grads. Atleast, in my hospital it is the case. I have recently been shortlisted for Orthopaedics in my trust.

At the same time, because of growing uncertainities and competition for SpR numbers even among EU grads, many IMGs are considering USMLE again, Me being one of them. Australia is another popular topic these days.

Katzung, when u said that ur friends have got 10 years visa form UK, did they declare Step 2 CS Visa or just applies in a visitors category?? Please do let me know as I am planning to apply in 3 weeks time for US Visa for Step2 CS. Just wanted to know my chances form UK.

Yes just tell the truth,i just told them am going for step-2 cs,however many of my friends did say they r visiting either a friend or a relative.

Many of my friends from pakistan got their visa stamped easily, but i know one doctor from pakistan who applied almost within 6 months of coming to uk and his visa got rejected, provided you are here for more than a year you should not have any problems, please also mention about rejection if they ask about it.

Also they might ask for additional processing time looking at the country of origin, they send the passport and fingerprints off to washington and if that happens it will take 15-20 days for visa process ( this is specially true if ur from Iran or Pakistan),but in most cases visa is granted.

Good Luck and all the best.

Thanks for replies. I have Higher Skilled Migrant Visa and current entry is valid till March 2007. I have a job till next year as well. How much bank statement should i have. Is + £5000 enough? The problem is that I will go to US provided I get Visa, for only 4 weeks. Now will that be sufficient time for everything. And not to mention, like most of us, I am desperate to get into a decent program in IM or EM.

Hi,

yes show a good bank balance, however avoid sudden transfer of funds into your account since they might become suspicious.

Otherwise get a letter from your medical staffing mentioning ur job period and annual pay before taxes

If u have hsmp then u shud not have problems.

U said ur in orthopedics now build up ur cv carefully for IM positions next year, coz invariably u will be asked in the interview about this.

why ru going for 4 weeks,go for few days and finish off ur step-2 cs,once u get visa it doesnot matter it will be multiple entry visa and u can travel anytime u want.

Thanks Katzung and bharat for your input. I will make visa application soon and get back to you on forum. Since you guys have been in UK, you probably would know how to apply for US Visa. Do i have to download forms from some US Embassy website in UK or just call US embassy London's switch board to get information. How long is the wait for the interview. Also, any input in regards to the chances for a couple match in IM.

for couple match i think u shud ask johnavin - he had over 5 prematch offers for couple and took it finally in a very reputed program in chicago.. but it usually works if ur scores are similar. and u need to try for visa and cs and s3 asap to increase ur chances of prematch. also since ur in ortho - u can always say that u want to do rheumatology as a subspecialty later on and get somethin published about that in good journals of europe..

Call 09042-450100 Monday through Friday, between 8.00 am and 8.00 pm, and Saturday, between 09.00 am and 4.00 pm.

The service is not available on British public holidays. Calls to this line are charged at £1.20/min from BT landlines. Some mobile and network providers may charge more.

Currently wait period is 1 month because of rush by IMGS!!!!!

But it shud cool down after august.

As apurva said couple match only works in scores of both husband and wife are good, but most people wil take ur spouse if he/she has got good scores into the same programme.

U will have to fill in DS-156 and DS-157 forms in order to apply, and get ur picture snapped according to embassy guidelines at snappy snapa.

Thanks, I will do that Katzung.

Now with regards to couple match..... How do you apply for couple match in the first place. I have 83/89 and my other half has 84/85sad.. we will both apply for IM programs. Not very good scores though, but do I have a chance in couple match? is it worth taking the risk or should we apply seperately? Also is this information generally available with the hospital if they offer couple match or not? What are the pros and cons of couple match.confused

apply for a couple match. u indicate in ur eras application and nrmp rol also. and apply early. many small comm progs wud like to take u2 with ur uk experience. it also depends on whether ur willin to go for a j1 - bcoz then u can apply for many many more places.. but it wud be difficult to crack a uni prog in a couple match..
