Hi all! I was wondering if anyone can help me with this. On an episode of Bones(TV), a child with hypophosphatemia was found dead. The mother doesn't have the disorder and therefore, they said that she can't be the biological mother. However, I read that there are spontaneous cases where a kid has the disorder without either of the parents having it. So, what evidence is there that they can be so sure the mother isn't the biological mother? Thanks!

Was the child male? If so then the faulty gene could only have been passed from the mother (is X-linked) if female then it could have come from the father or mother (a very sickly father if from him). It would be worth chasing the father up to see if he is a sufferer. Enzymes in the liver such as alkaline phosphatase produce free phosphate for the body to use so maybe the child could have had hepatic problems. Hope this helps
