hi there I noticed you also put 'UK' - I am from UK - london. Similarly, finished all except step 3, which I am planning on taking this year to apply for 2007 match. I am still doing research and hope to stay in the lab until I match. My questions 1. how come you did not need step 3 for visa? Are you on a green card? 2. How do you plan to study for Step 3? cheers bd

I am a permanent resident, which has made things much easier.I didn't require step 3 at the time of match. (I didn't know you needed to have step 3 completed to apply for match, regardless of your visa). You only need step 1 , step 2CK and step 2CS to apply for residency positions. For the step 3 exam I am using Kaplans qbank, q book and lecture notes. I purchased 'strong medicine' and' first aid for step 3' as review texts'. The only other thing I may get is Usmleworld CCS as i note a lot of other people are using it. I placed UK docs in my initial posting as I have worked with many of you guys in Sydney...and have met some really nice and fun people Also during my interviews I came across a guy from UK, who was from cambridge university. It was just good to know that there were people from UK and aus here as you tend to miss them. We exchanged phone numbers and email addresses, so if you want to contact him i'll send him an email. Are you by any chance in LA? What residency are you applying for? I will be starting my radiology residency after my prelim year. Hope I was of some help, please free to ask any other questions.

Hey Sydney1... I totally understand in regards to not seeing many australians on these types of forums. This is my first time I have ever posted anything on a forum. I studied for all the USMLE exams by myself and am currently cranking through step 3 and completing the BLS and ACLS courses(life support). I decided to join this forum to help my fellow sydney(aussie) siders to give them the inside look and also some key pointers and yes, possible ways on how to procure a residency. you are a registrar in Sydney...what field and what hospital? why are you sitting the usmle? btw I am from Sydney, went to UNSW med school, i did my internship and residency in Sydney(RMO1 and then ICU registrar). I am now in LA about to start working. You might find this hilarious but the place i am doing my preliminary year(1st year of radiology registrar training) the program director is from Sydney...I just met him by chance during my interviews. He actually interviewed me. That was the first time I came across an australian physician. btw are you moving here? or are you just coming out here to do a fellowship? ausdoc

hi ausdoc I am a Uni of Qld graduate and did post grad research work at Uni of Sydney. I am now working at RNSH. The reason for my sitting the USMLE is because I have family over in the US. I am aiming on securing a residency in the US. Thats great someone from australia interviewed you for a US residency position...how ironic! Do you have an email I can contact you with? That would be great. Cheers

hey syd.. for safety i don't give my email out... i created an alias.. you can reply me on ausdoc1@yahoo.com btw alot of my friends from med school are at RNSH... one of my closest friends is in the GP program, he is about to finish. One thing I can say about the US system is that the exams are easy but getting a residency especially in competitive fields is hard. ausdoc It is actually the same way in Sydney, local grads are given the competitive fields and foreign grads are required for areas that are less competitive or more positions.

hey there, Im also from Sydney, working as a GP and a researcher- doing a PhD with the university of Sydney. I am very keen to go over to the US and work in family medicine- clinically and/or academically. I really need to do the USMLE but havent got a clue how to go about it. Would be good to find some people to study with. Are there anyone out there who may want to meet up and have a chat about this? cheers

Hey guys finished step 3 awaiting step results. Towards the end of internship ...and yes it is more hours than working the aussie system. But without doubt the training is more rigid in australia hence longer. I feel as a med student in aus we new more of the basics and also about clinical medicine and how to do a through exam. People are nice and love the aussie accent, but of course there r some people who are not so nice. You get used to the hours. In australia there is no such thing as capping, you just keep admitting, plus in aussie land they r called consultants vs attednings here. there is more structure to the programs but i still think the programs r really good in aus. I have had a no. of uk grads contact me and now i am working with a uk grad. boy do i miss sydney...and i can't tell u how many times i look back.

it's nice to see IMG to take highly competitive spot what do you think was the main factor that contributed to this fact? or was it a combination of few? thanks for sharing your experience
