she must be certified (= doing step 1, 2CK, 2CS) in order to be able to study her residency again because according to what i know in USA they donīt care if you are already a specialist, if you wanna work like an internist, you must study internal medicine in the USA. However, iīve known of some people who arenīt certified and are working in the USA in their speciality that they studied in their home country. I think this is some illegal but it can be done, i have no idea how to do it in this way.

Visit the ECFMG website (Educational Comission for Foreign Medical Graduates) , to obtain all the information on requirements on how to get certified by them, and take the different exams: USMLE 1, USMLE step 2 CK and CS (USMLE = united states medical license examination). www.ecfmg.org Also check the medical boards in your state and read about their requirements, to find their website do a google search "Medical board of Florida" or "Board of medicine, Florida". I know of some people who did their specialty in their homecountry and had to do the residency in USA again to be able to practice, but started as a PG-2 (second year of residency). I guess it depends on the residency 's curriculum and I know Cuba has an excellent health care program and education so she may be able to do that. Hope this helps, Good luck and welcome to the USA

I know that people who has a speciality in pathology doesn't need to take the ecfmg exams in order to practice their field in here since they doesn't have contact with patients.

that's not true. You have to be ecfmg certified and enrolled in a us program in order to practice

your medical license gotten in any country has no value here in US, having a specialty may be useful as a reference of your capacities when you apply for a residence but that's it, even people graduated in Puerto Rico have to pass the steps, going further, even people from US have to pass the steps, hello! it means every single physician in US has gone through the steps and passed them, I hope this is clear. Tell your cousin to contact Kaplan and they will explain the whole frame very well, and free. www.kaptest.com look for a close center in your area.
