many programs would like to see some US clinical experience as a screening criteria - when you begin calling programs by july-august, you will know - but by then it would too late to arrange one, so try to arrange one early

As far as I know, observerships are not considered US clinical experience because you are not allowed to touch the patients, all you do is shadow a doctor. It may be useful to get connections, specially if you are thinking on applying to that specific hospital.

I personally think observerships are useful but overestimated by IMG. Thats only my personal opinion who many people may argue.

You dont need to have an observership to guarantee a place... many IMG have gotten spots without doing one, including myself.

yea.....externships are much better than observerships ...but observerships are better than none at all.

again - they may be viewed differently by different PDs...but having one never hurts :-)

observerships are not highly regarded...but real clinical experience is that is research and writing a publication etc.

I also matched without US clinical experience...Also I sat my step 2CS in nov and got my ecfmg certificate..in january 2006.

I know these are the favorable things seen in your application:
1. ECFMG certificate.
2. CA med. board license or PTAL if applying in CA.
3. usmle step 1, 2CK and 2CS....seriously despite what others say scores consistently in the 90's just gives you better options they are not required to match. but if you want a good residency and to be affiliated witha university teaching hospital...then whats the harm.
4. if you are a permanent resident another bonus
5. a publication or one you are writing which you can state as research or volunteer work in your CAF on ERAS.
6. persistence call back, email...
7.apply to as many programs as one will click.

I got radiology residency interviews even at the end and also interview one after the other for prelim positions in internal medicine all in LA.

They look at your application....things you have done, and once you get the interview know how to charm them. show them energy and commitment and know the hospital that you are interviewing for.

another big thing is contacts...one contact leads to another...trust me

Hello:

I researched a lot of things about match requirements, and this is what I concluded (please correct me if I'm wrong):
  1. High scores are very important
  2. You can match with or without US LOR, strong homeland LOR will do.
  3. When a program requires US xp, means Hand-on-patient xp, not observerships (shadowing)...
  4. Observerships is not a MUST, and it can offer only the opportunity to obtain an US LOR (but is not a sure thing), and to make contacts if you want to apply to that especific program.
  5. Have to prepare a good cv (publications, research, etc)
  6. Make a good programs research so you won't apply to programs where definitive don't have a chance.
  7. I'm not sure about how insistent you have to be after applying, so the clarification will be very appreciated.

Take care!

thanks indeed to each one of u for ur input!

What does a strong homeland LOR mean? Is it enough to have one from the Dean of the college, or does it have to be from a doctor in my country who is American board certified?

mmmm...raised eyebrow

Now that U ask so, I'm really not sure...I'd like to know too..lol.

What I think is that a strong one would be a LOR from a doctor that knows your work very good, is a high ranked faculty, and is board certified or has connections with US hospitals or medical societies... That is what I think.

Digitaldoc:

If I send my applications on sept 1st, when do you consider I should start calling for decisions?

Thanks!!! All the best!!

If you apply on September 1 - don't call the programs any early than the third week in September. Programs may not start to review applications until they know that they have the bulk of them in ERAS. I started sending out invitations in mid-October.

Good luck.
