well so far so good with good resolutions. just came back at 10;30 from a passover dinner at a friends. was most enjoyable. the tradition is so rich. such good food too. now i have shunting from my brain. oh dear. i have 80 pages to do of bioochem. i know i cannot finish them in 2 hrs so i hope i can at least do 40 but realistically i think i can make 20. i hope to make up for lost time tomorrow.

well i am really down. am not unhappy but i just cannot seem to move. today, woke up late at 9am. so i did nto make any entry into my journal thinking to save some time. tried to study but went back to bed. so i have spent the whole day sleeping after each chapter i read. i have read 3 chapters that means i have slept 3 times already. now time is 6:30pm. i have 3 chapters of biochem to go. i pray God i am done with them by 10 so i can do qbank today. i thought the worst was over with neuro but bioch is worse. God please help your daughter. give me the strength to carry on. open my eyes and my brain so i can take it all in the first time. today's moto HE WHO BEGAN A GOOD WORK IN ME WILL BE FAITHFUL TO COMPLETE IT.

hi tolito, hows it going? I just saw that you have started biochem. Is kaplan enough or do we need high yield? It is really hard for me. I understand very well while reading. But when I start doing questions everything is falling apart. planning to revise the whole thing befor I jump to neuro.and again for neuro- is kaplan enough or HY is necessary? All the best

thanks guys for your encouraging words. it really touches my heart that my experience is a source of inspiration for others, then i say to myself that i shoudl also be encourged too. today has ended better than it started. it's 2:40am and i am still alert ( what did i expect with all te naps i had during the day). i will not push myself tomorrow, i will wake up when my body clock wakes u) am sorry to say i did not finish bioch. i have the chapter on purine and pyrimidine metab to do. i must give you the good news that i was rewarded in lipid metab, i missed only one question out of 13. that makes me feel good. this is just my first reading of biochem. i promised to use scud missiles and it looks like they are working.. i re read zerocool's experience today and it just struck home. i had to jot down some of his advise. really articulate and to the point. it will surely help me planning my studies from this point on. http://www.prep4usmle.com/forum/thread/30882 am going to make a plate for my hubby who has gone to work and then a bowl of ice cream, a shower to cool me down. i have this detective novel am reading ( will probably be awake long enough to read the first line) CIAO

Tolito, Thanks for your message in your journal on zerocool's post. It is really useful. He should have gotten his score by now. What is his score, any idea?

Tolito, keep it up, you are almost done with Biochem, personally I think Biochem is the hardest stuff, so many names and pathways gosh! but you are already nailing their questions so that's a good sign buddy, next week after goljan I will be done with lectures and will be on my own, maybe will watch the tapes for immuno, the rest until July will be only study on my own, i hope we can hang around keep your studies at your best steady state

thanks coolguy and 4mymd. zerocool got 235/95. it is posted in that thread yes today i will need to drop bioch. i hope over the next couple weeks i will be able to come back to it. just like zerocool's suggestion, it is about integrated knowledge. cos they will not ask direct questions most of the time. today, i woke up late, no problem. i will do 100 qbank. then i will conclude last chapter in bioch and do genetics and mol biol for the rest of the day. God be on my side to help me with all the new info. today's moto: KNOWLEDGE PUFFS UP BUT LOVE BUILDS UP

Tolito, On one of the prep journals I read that you were listening to Kaplan video lectures of Dr. Ruebush for Micro. Are you sure? Because I have just started Immuno and it is Dr. Dunn who is talking.

hi guys, been away a little bit. i was just stressed out. now i am back with a bang. 4myd and coolguy, i do not have kaplan dvd and have not listened to any of them. they were not delivered to me though i paid for it online. wey2002, in zerocool's post, i was most impressed by his 'organized' approach to the exam style. and he posted a lot of high yield questions there. those are the questions that if one answers them correctly will make a difference between a good score like 80's and an excellent one like 90's. i'll give an eg. a 26yr old girl was involved in mva and it was found that she is partially blind on the right eye. a direct light reflex was negative but a consensual reflex was postive. where was the nucleus damaged? the *x$* people will not ask you what nerve is involved cos they know you know it is crII but you are more likely to forget where its nucleus is. so i found zerocool's analysis very good. i never got to finishing bioch at all. i failed qbank when i was done with first reading . so i started again with targeted reading. i was done with purine and ;yrimidine metab. i was bout to start lipid, cho and amino acid when i lost my spirit. so today, iam confused where to start off??????maybe consolidate what i know lest i come back to it and it all looks foreign??? anyhow, today's moto HE IS FAITHFUL

Well. if you have Goljan Rapid review, do Biochem Qs on what you have read. Go to new stuff, come back after you finish all biochem, don't dwell on one topic. Do Qs can help you remember things and correlate other subjects better. If you donot do Qs, u are more likely to reread what you know before rather than look at those that you do not know so well. We tend to study what we know better. better to go over 3X quickly than try to remember everything in a single long attempt.

thanks wey. yes i will do questions tonight at the end of my second reading. i must confess that this stuff is exceedingly foreign. the last time i read it was before light bulbs were designed by edison!!!!! anyhow i am making some headway. i am linking up the cycles by enzymes and substrates and vitamins. i am noting the rate limiting enzymes, genetic defects and the likes. i am noting inhibitors and activators. i have like 10 charts for these. God help me remember....

verdict??? no good. just finished qbank 50q pure bioch. my score was better than last, scored 54% but much less than average 62. funny phenomenon i noticed was i would get those question that less than 40% students got correct and miss the ones that 80% got correct???? it is very obvious that i do not know the common things that every student knows. so i will go over during my third reading. amazing phenomenon..... it makes no sense. this does not make me happy cos i will not do well at this rate. hmmmmm i have had enough of biochem so tomorrow i start micro using mrs. wish me good luck.

tolito ur doin very good actually , biochemistry is a drage , dont bother about the score , just do Qs and then if u see some thing new or a concept explained nicely , note that down , i personally dont like kaplan just bcoz it dose not feel much organized or may be its just me , although the material is very nice and after the dvd it was makin more sence to me , but we see ppl all the time who only use the books no dvds no nothing and they score 90+ so u dont worry , ur doin great , and its good that ur takin break from the subject some times it helps , but keep doin Qs and dont bother about the scores , it just means that u have to read the subject a lil more and a it gives u a lil idea on the HY stuff ,so keep goin good luck

Dear tolito, how r u doing? Biochem , yes it is hard as such, but make sure you know the clinical relevant things, enzyme associted stuffs like that, but same time it makes u feel comfortable only u know the skeleton here..sometimes, it may make u feel crazy, if ur mind is not clear and ready to accept the complexity.. hence tolito..why dont you try studying with a friend over the phone..if u can, that makes u feel much better, when two heads think about teh same, things become more clearer than ever..also when u explain it to somebody, u also gain the confidence..please if u can try this, I am sure U feel much better! MRS..I am sure, will be a good break from your Biochem..for the very first time when I bought this book I finished this whole book just in 2 days..because I enjoyed all the humorous stuff and pneumonics over there...tolito dont worry .U can do it..and U will do it..Good luck keep moving.

thanks folks. aisha, yes kaplan LN are a funny bunch to grasp concept from esp without the DVD. i did not bother to get any new books cos most people say kaplan is good enough. i wonder though, if these are new graduates, kaplan will be fine but for oldies like me, i wonder. yes hodgkins, i will concentrate next time on clinical stuff. in actual fact that was were i missed the bulk of 'simple' questions. you know all the genetic diseases and their clinical presentations as well as the pathways involved. we shall all beat and conquer this demon called USMLE. today's moto HE WHO BEGAN A GOOD WORK IN ME WILL BE FAITHFUL TO COMPLETE IT;
