Its been nearly a year since I took and studied for Step 1 and kept up with this forum. I figured it did me good to update and track what I was doing on the web and also to interact with others.

I'm currently still doing my 3rd year core rotations, currently in surgery. I have obgyn left to do. Im trying to move my obgyn rotation from this june/july to late december so that I can arrange some light electives and take the kaplan step 2 live lectures. Also trying to get involved in some radiology related research too!

In the mean time, I am currently trying to arrange things on my own so that in case I can't work it out, I have a back up plan and begin now.

History : Step 1 233/94, ross student
Residency goal : Diagnostic Radiology; possibly applying to Anesthesiology as well.
Step 2 goal : at least a 233/94
Aim to take Step 2 CK : Either late August or Early September
Step 2 CS: Scheduled for June 16th, but could change based on how thigns change below.

Books : Always hear its best to keep to 1 book and re-read that...so
all Kaplan
Misc : Boards and Wards and Step 2 secrets

My source of questions right now will be pre-test medicine and pre-test surgery as well as MKSAP 3 (its in the mail) and kaplan qbook.

As I get within 2-3 months of the exam, I'll sign up for usmleworld.

Right now, I'm concentrating on getting surgery read, been using the essentials of general surgery book by Lawrence, since our conference prof? is an editor of the book. He tries to orient things towards step 2 though more than anything.
Medicine I'm trying to read every day out of the FA for medicine.

If anyone has any advice or suggestions. I'm more than open at this point since I'm really just getting started.

good luck everyone.

Hi everyone, haven't gotten much done on the step 2 prep study but ...

I have finally gotten some work done on securing time to take a review course.

Electives are ok with me not doing obgyn before those rotations.

Now Im just trying to figure out when I wnna take the time off.

Iam looking at doing this

5/29 to 6/16 of Infectious Disease = 3 weeks
6/19 to 7/7 off = 3 weeks == begin kaplan review
7/10 to 7/28 of GI elective = 3 weeks, light elective here == kaplan ends on 7/30
7/31 to 8/18 of heme/onc elective = 3 weeks, light elective here
8/21 to 9/1 = off, take step 2 in this time
9/4 continue with scheduled elective

push obgyn core to december

any thoughts? at first I wanted a lot of time off at the end of the course, but then these electives would cut into my review course time.

well

I didn;t get that much done on the studying front today. I read the urology section in FA medicine today.

Read some issues also relating to match preperation with my school and stuff.

Checked out the new FA step 2 CK

  #4

Ok

got my step 2 cs date setup in 2 months. Doing some CS reading every day now...

on the CK note:

Bought my FA step 2 ck (5th edition). Setup a schedule to review all of medicine over the next month or so.

At some point I gotta learn peds and obgyn though.

Did some urology today and endocrinology

  #5

didn't get much done today.

worked a bit on my personal statement

signed up for kaplan live

finished reading FA medicine of endocrinology. Finished reading trauma for my surgery rotation.

and did laundry .... mmmm clean clothes

  #6

started research today.... read some shock chapter for surgery rotation. ready to sleeeeep.

  #7

  #8

thanks for the reply.

Anyways, did some research tonight in regards to my project... looks like it might be a short topic and I might be put elsewhere.

As for studying. Did some of the endocrinology questions from the Pre-test medicine. Did pretty well. I did all but ~8 questions? and only missed 4. Just need to review stuff like myxedema coma and that sort of stuff.

Read more from the FA section of cardiology. Up to the point of the dysrythmmias. Came home a bit early because of the need to excercise and stuff.

No progress on my personal statement. Decided laundry needed to be done ...

arranged to take over a friend's usmleworld subscription. I think he has a week left. I'll be signing up for it in May for 3 months. I wanna be doing those questions and really reading the answers on them. Hopefully I can push up my test date to early-mid August.

Waiting on Kaplan books still. THought they'd be in by today. Apparently maybe by the end of this week ...
Feel like I need to start addressing Obgyn and Peds from reading the exam experiences.

update:
friend emailed me login tonight. Did some mixed questions and got 54% right.

hey folks

long day school wise. Didn't get a chance to do any studying.

Had 6 hours of lecture today. THought our quiz was regarding shock and surgical critical care. It covered more of fliuds and electrolytes....

Good news. Kaplan books are sitting in the apartment office for me to pick up tommorow morning.

Gotta go beg my surgery attending for a LOR for this away elective later this year.

what else ... what else ... Im sure I've got more to say.

Ah yes. GOing home this week for the jewish holidays so I'll probably be quiet on here. Not that many if any at all follow what I'm reading at the moment.

well I managed to read about the first 6? chapters of the kaplan obgyn book.

did a question block in UW today as well, went downt to 46%. I made some mistakes where I knew I had made the wrong choice. Even then my percentage might have been around 55 or so. Oh well. Its still learning.

Read lawrence on Burns as well.

  #13

howdy folks

will update early even though i might get some more work done later.

did another block of UW questions - 50%
read chapters 5,6,7 of kaplan obgyn. (part was re-reading).

worked more on my personal statement, due to school in about a month.

thats about it.

  #14

its been awhile since my last post.
I've gotten busy trying to write my personal statement, which I hope to finish by tommorow.

had a lot of research work to do this past week as well. and then the OR became super busy this past week. So I've had my hands full.

In terms of studying. All I've done is urology readying for surgery rotation. Read cardio, gi, started endocrine in Kaplan medicine.

  #15

not much else to report.

  #18

welp, took nbme #1 -- did Horribly! 340. biggest issues were in the cardiovascular system (not a suprise for me, I'm not comfortable with it), MSK, OB/Gyn, Nm development and stuff.

Stuff I exceled at -- Nutrl and Digestive disorders, Renal, Urinary whatever, Endocrine and metabolic

rest I was around the middle of the pack or lower.

  #19

I've ignored this for awhile now.

Been doing Kaplan medicine and UW questions for each section. My last rotation really sidetracked me. It was great form a teaching standpoint, but the days just ruined my nights. I could barely stay awake once I got home.

in the mid 50s on UW.

bougt the new BnW for some reason.

Dats about it.

  #20

overdue update....

welp kaplan live is over. it was great and interesting and a big drain on me mentally and physically. I still feel a bit hungover from the long days and hours of driving.

took the nbme form #3 after kaplan ended. Noticed a nice 110 point increase over nbme form #1. I wasn't able to study for step 2 like I had intented because of the time and driving factors, my concurrent research and doing a light, yet more time consuming elective.

So because of everything I felt it important to postpone my exam till Oct 7th. I still might move it up to september depending on how things go.

I've also moved up my CS exam to 8/23. I felt it was better to get that out of the way at least while the opportunity was available.

plan on doing FA for CS in mornings, ck in noon. Some of the studying overlaps because of the knowledge of each problem. Hope to recruit a guinnea pig or two for a day or two of studying a week of hands on experience.

thats all for now.
