hello everybody
i am an IMG, have not been to USA yet, so i dont know about the probability of getting general surgey.
i have always dreamt to become a surgeon.
my scores are step1 99/245
step 2ck 99/250
is it possible for me to get categorical general surgery cos i have heard that they dont usually prefer a non us citizen IMG. what if i apply to some categorical general surgery after getting my Green card.
do they give categorical general surgery to a non us citizen IMG?
well i have lots many hurdles to go through but if you answer my question , atleast i will prepare to cherish my dreams
if they give categorical Gen Surg, what all extra thing do i need to have to get it at a good medical school.
please answer

i have also heard that general surgery at us is a pyramidal system. i.e only one or two residents of say 5-6 total PGY 1 residents make it to PGY 5.
is it so ?

hi!
i dont know ttoo much abt surgery but u seemed lost so thought wd answer all i know.u can get categ surg esp with ure exceptional scores even on h1.its tougher than med but not impossible.try n do some externship or atleast observership n get recommendation frm american surgeon.it will help ure application.i dont know abt pyramidal system,perhaps u mean categorical n prelim surgery.prelim is 1 yr position n after that position is not guarranteed ,however if u apply the yr after that will b counted as experience n will b to ure advantage.
They do prefer green card holders but u shd wait only if u r very fresh grad n ure greencard is expected soon.otherwise try for the 2007 match with ure scores n US recommendations.

i would go with drkill's suggestion,he/she is spot on,yes u have nice scores and get some us clinical experience,if ur green card is 1-2 years away then u can always apply for prilim position and then to a categorical,if not apply with uslor's u will do well.

ask sharvil (pm him or post somethin separate to catch his attraction) .he had gc thoh - and scores similar to urs. try uni of washington for a externship.. sharvil got into categ umndnj - hope that uplifts ur spirits
