Why infliximab is used in RA?

Infliximab (trade name Remicade) is a type of drug known as anti-TNF. In people with rheumatoid arthritis a protein called TNF is present in the blood and joints in excessive amounts, where it increases inflammation. Anti-TNF drugs block the action of TNF and so can reduce inflammation. In this way they can help people with active rheumatoid arthritis.

Thanks babli.

This is from kaplan. It says that infliximab is a monoclonal antibody to TNF used in rheumatoid arthritis, and its use may lead to an increased infection rate.

Is this a mistake? It should be "decrease infection rate", right?

ING,

MY IMMUNOLOGY IS NOT SO GOOD ANYLONGER.DID STEP 1 IN DEC, TNF IS NEEDED IN THE LYMPHOCYTE RESPONSE TO FOREIGN ANTIGEN, SO BLOCKING ITS RESPONSE LL LEAD TO INCREASE INFECTION.

ALSO THIS IS WHY THERE IS VIRTUALLY NO CASE OF RA IN AIDS PX(INT MED)

I'm also confused about this.

Interferon -gama1b (recombinant form) is used in chronic granulomatous disease to decrease infection liability because it increases the formation of TNF.

Should increasing TNF cause increase infection liability?

INC TNF SHOULD DEC INFECTION, IT IS NEEDED FOR T LYMPHOCYTE FUNCTION

T LYMPHOCYTE MEDIATES THE EFFECTS SEEN IN RA, SO DECREASING ITS FUNNCTION IS WHAT INFLIXIMAB DOES

ALSO IN HIV, THE IS ALREADY DEC LYMPHOCYTE FUNCTION, SO THEY CANT HAVE RA

HOPE I ANS UR Q

Oh, yeah.

decrease TNF -> the patient is easier to get infection disease -> infection rate increase.

decrease TNF -> reduces the signs and symptoms of inflammation in RA

increase TNF -> the patient is not easier to get infection disease -> infection rate decrease.

increase TNF -> increase the signs and symptoms of inflammation in RA

haha..
