I have an opportunity to get into an IM community program...but have been told that my chances of a fellowship through this program are remote..I was withdrawn from the match as my cs results werent in at the time...So should i just go for this program or wait till the next match comes around?? my scores are step1 88, step2 83, cs pass, 2001 graduate..no visa issue, and i have a month of IM observership coming up in a university hospital.. I'm pretty confused at this point,as i'm not sure whether losing a year is a wise thing..Would really appreciate your input, especially if someone with a similar criteria to mine got into a pretty decent program in either FM or IM..

it would help if u tell us where u got the position,..competition is going to b cut throat again next year..n to b honest with u ur scores r average..so if its better than interfaith or lincoln then grab it...no one can make comments without knowing the name of institution,...u can look up for the reviews for that program on www.scutwork.com

getting fellowships ..it all depends upon if u want cardio or GI or Heme/Onc..coz these r getting very hard to get..but if u want endo, rheumatology or stuff then it should't b a problem.,..see in their list of residents placed in fellowships for past years..hope this helps...good luck

Thanks alot,i appreciate you prompt reply....The PD himself has told me that most of his residents end up as internists or hospitalists...and that fellowships are very difficult to come by...his own chief resident is having difficulty in getting a fellowship, and i'm talking about the easy ones like endocrinology or ID....I realize that my scores are average but am confused as to whether at the end of he road i would be better off in a FP in a good place or IM in a place which wont be able to help me specialize..Also not to forget as i have read soo much in these forums its not just your scores that sell u to a PD, its how u present urself and ur personal drive..

well scores and USCE is going to get u interviews first especially in IM..period. once u get interviews u can show ur motivation n personal drive n wat not..not discouraging u but just stating facts..n ultimately its u who has to decide whether u would b happy doing IM or FP..good luck
