bhagat, GC is important in a way that you can apply to the places which does not support visa, so you have an advantage over the people who does not have GC.In other words, you can be walking genius with stellar scores, research, clinical experience but if they say:" We do not sponsor visa"-- they really mean it and they will not make an exeption for you. I did not apply all over the USA map, so I can only speak from my own experience but I noticed that an advantage of having a GC ( I have one) disappears because quite a few very good programs, yes, do not sponsor visas ( which would be a plus for me) but they have very high standards: you have a GC, so what -- be a recent graduate within 2-3years , have above 90 scores, publications... Other programs are less strict, but they also sponsor visa, so the advantage of having a GC disappears in the common pool of all candidates with good credentials. So, GC works only in connection with everything else. It is better to have it for sure because lack of it can bar you from the program you may dream the most about, but it is only a part of the package. There were discussions on this issue before. The ideal situation is: you are a fresh graduate with high 80s scores and above, good LORs even from your own country, research experience, GC holder ,USCE ( In order of importance ). You start lacking something ( exept USCE if you are a fresh graduate) -- you go downhill as a rule : from an prestigious program to very good program... to " I can live with that", to " Somebody, pick me , please". I mean, the statistics for FMG who are US citizens are not that much sweeter than for usual FMGs which means that GC or citizenship does have weight but not as much as some of us would want it to be. Another thing is: there was incredible amount of people with very high scores this year, and I think it will continue to be like that. I mean, one can by CD nowdays online and shout 90 without much of a trouble. 99/99 is not a rare case anymore, so there has to be something else: LOR that caches the eye, publication, something. THE WHOLE package OF ALL credentials is important. Also, my attending during my extership told me: " You are smart, but you also need luck" I got lucky ....I saw so many truly wonderful candidates that were interviewed 15 a day. How can anyone remember you if you are 15 th?!!! When you are among the people with same credentials it is a field of luck and lottery.

I think having a GC is a big deal, especially here in CA where I matched, since most hospitals here do not sponsor visas.
