Hi honey

For a candidate like U its not a bad score at all.

may be U will get a greencard soon and then its a piece of cake.

the greatest advantage for u is U r in USA, try to make use of these precious time.

Try to contact hospitals.

"...may be U will get a greencard soon and then its a piece of cake..."

To be responsible for the information which one gives would not hurt even for the anonymous forum. Such respond is just an insult for 3 digits IQ.
GC makes things easier to some degree, it allows one to apply to a wider range of programs... it does NOT turn the situation to the "piece of cake" state though. My advice would be to try to prepare for a better Step 3 score ( kind of to show that the results before were not true you). And yes, look around for the clinical experience. The hospital I did my externship with is listed on the page of this very forum, and in almost any place I had interviews, I saw some observers. Maybe it is strictly prohibited in, say, California, I do not know, but somebody posted a while ago information about observership in Miami. So, things happen. I know, some will argue that the majority will never have the opportunity for USCE. True. Some do not need such experience. But there are situations when USCE is vital for even getting any interviews. Guys, you have to learn to swim by yourselves, to reach out for the opportunity. At least take your time to brouse previous pages of this forum or read other SIMILAR current threads.

once again i agree with cs obsessed.....
rashmi, if i am right , you have not been thru this yourself yet.......so u cannot comment whats a piece of cake and what isnt ...serioulsy....
i was in this years match for quite a while before a timely prematch came along and its tough out there...merely having a GC is no guarantee of anything as are scores of 90 plus no indication of whether one will match or not.

I totally agree with coolbabe76 and CSobsessed. In today's situation, honestly nothing apart from luck can really guarantee a residency placement. There are people without greencard with excellent scores, and people with greencard with excellent scores, who neither end up getting ample interviews or even match for that matter. This is a country, that gives more importance to the whole package of CV , personal statement and of course the charisma you project during interviews!

So, my suggestion to ''Honey'', would be to, by hook or by crook, get into a hospital / clinic and convince the PD to allow you to do observership / externship. If not, then getting into research as an assistant is also not a bad idea. The whole intent should be to show no gaps in your cv.

And your scores are not ''bad''....There are people with far less scores and far more attempts, who have made it big in this country.

So, cheer upsmiling face and focus on decorating your cv for 2007. Affectively, you have 6 months to really do something, so as to be able to show experience by September, when you start applying for 2007 Match.

Good luck.

Hi cooolbabe, csobsessed and dear tania...

From my very little experience I have presumed that having a green card has changed the fortune of many of my seniors.

Out of 16 seniors from our school 7 had green card (all women) matched and none of them had scores nowhere near comparable to you 3.

out of other 9 , 4 had double 99...unfortunately 2 couldnt make it in this match.

Other 5 were very unlucky to have 4-5 interviews in average and only 1 could succeed.

Now, what should I draw the conclusion from above data. I know it doesnt show the whole prospect of applicants and matching but I do make a sense out of it that GREEN CARD MAKES UR SITUATION LOT MORE FAVORABLE THAN ANYTHINGELSE.

I have a great respect for you 3 in this forum, have always been helpful and more experienced still I dont mind if you guyz are unwilling to nod at me.

Wish us luck.nod

rashmi_k3, there is always something to the story which makes all the difference. Probably your fresh double 99 graduates applied only to top programs or there is something else you do not know. if I ( with my double 99 and GC) applied only to the programs I REALLY wanted to go-- I would've have NO interviews. Maybe we all tend to emphasize what we lack but from my point of view-- a graduation year is THE MOST important thing, plus reasonable scores from the first attempt, plus no less than 3 LORs. In this case programs at least look at your application more closely. I could not believe how much attention programs paid for the number of LORs. it was like: " You have 2 letters, send us third and we will send you an invitation." GC makes things easier, but ,as I said before, it does not turn the situation to the " piece of cake", and false comforting people, as you do, is WRONG. Now, I have a couple of friends who got residency with low scores and at least two attempts. They have GC. But GC is NOT what made difference for them. One worked as an physician assistant for 5 years in the hospital and has such a great personality that EVERYBODY who meets this person is willing to help. He was told to just pass the exams and they would be happy to have him as a resident. Another one did not match one year, did her externship and matched next year in a questionable NY program. So, the point is-- they did not just sit on their GCs-- in each case there was additional something to make things happen. How one handles interviews also matters. I was told a story that the guy got residency slot because it turned out that he has the same very rare hobbie as a PD has. They could not stop talking about the subject and the guy got a spot. Do not get me wrong: it is not like unqualified person can make it easily, but, among two people with equal credentials, he got it because there are people in the programs, not machines. The bottom line is, who wants to believe that GC is everything, let be it. My two successful friends ( see, I also have a lot of friends and statistics applied to them too;0) told me do not rely on GC too much and try my best to improve my CV, and the advice paid off. I am passing the same advice. Take it or leave it.

in the game of cards - there is always the wild card / joker... for a guy with stellar creds - gc is that trump card.. remem u cant win the game just using the trump card. u need a good hand too..

GC helps when ur 90+/90+ and competiting with a 99/99
my friend with the same creds as me got 10uni calls (including places like thomas jefferson) and is in the uni of oklahoma.. im waiting outside a temple doing what i know bestwink

gc is worthless if ur have tries and grad issues and stuff..
otherwise there wud be no visa sponsoring hospitals and no gc wud remain unmatched..

anyways any female us citizen out there - kindly pm mewink

rashmi - kindly be more reasonable in ur opinions.. remem data is like a "miniskirt"wink

apurva

CSobsessed and apurva...... i think U justified your arguement very well.

Now after reading ur post I feel like i was wrong and overjudgemental about the greencard issue.

It could be my ignorance or false belief.

Thanks for showing me the light.nod

Hi,
I was just going thro the comments and wanted to tell my observation.I have a classmate who applied with score way less than mine, she didnt make thro medical school in time, but she had a month into voluntary research at the time of applying(sept 1)
So u must be wondering why I am telling all this story.
She had 20+ interviews and I didnt have any.
The only difference I can find is GC and I mth of research she had.
And also she matched at a very good program with fellowships.
I dont say it is easy to get into residency with a GC,but it has an advantage.
Good Luck to all

  #13

Its true that they have some advantage but its not the only thing what matters.

Nobody wants to know how many years did u take to finish your med school, but what is your score and research and GC..etc etc
