I think it is very competitive. I met a lot of Med-Ped applicants. They came from very good universities and great credentials.

med peds is less competitive than med and more than peds. but dont expect a good fship after it although in theory u are eligible for both med and peds fships. most medpeds do primary care apurva

well i disagree with u.. although us seniors competing for a spot is a good indicator but not an absolute indicator. ppl with way lower scores than needed for im have got into med peds.. and if data was the sole criterion - then ur data states that peds should be statrospherically competitive apurva

Interesting discussion there... BTW can anyone tell me how competitive is it for an IMG to get into 'Emergency Medicine'? Any success stories there?

Apurva Do u mean that score is the criteria to find out the competitiveness for any programme? Then i dont think U are having the right information. Even scoring tripple 99 people don get a chance into Ortho and Dermat...why? Because we are competing with Amercan graduates not their SCORES According to the data, American grads prefer MED_PEDS and PEDS than IM, so the conclusion is IM is far less competitive from anyones point of view. i hope u get my point, but i know u wont agree with me. Goodluck apurva.

Doc 2378. There are few who get into EM every year, but they are not counted under typical IMG status. Most have previous residency exp (ACGME IM/TY/Prelim Med) or experience in other countries. its not tough but rare to sneak through. Good luck

doc_droc_apurva, one of my friends with middle 90s and GC, and externship, and a brief research in Children's hospital wanted Pediatrics badly and did not get it, got a very good IM program instead...I did not apply for med-ped because I thought it was too competitive: fewer programs and the percentage of the US graduates who not only compete but actually FILL the slots. So FMG is left with 20% to begin with instead of 50 % in IM, grossly... Maybe I was wrong do not apply though. What can be happening that less number of FMGs is interested in med-peds or peds, so even if it is for only 20 % but the competition between FMGs for those 20 % is less tough... I met an American graduate at Marshall University who was a med-ped resident. He said he chose combined program because of more in-patient training for peds than in FP program. Another reason I did not apply to med-ped was because the PDs for those programs are often the same as for IM program or Peds program. I just could not see how the same PD would read my two different personal statements if I am to apply to the same institution but different programs. Again, maybe I was wrong and missed the opportunity...

U r absolutely right csobsessed. Its tough on paper to compete with american grads for IM_PEDs. And also one more fact is that IM_PEDS is provided only at good community and university hospitals. so it makes the situation worse for an average credential holder FMG. Apurva..i liked the SKIRT one. GL@U
