ephedrine is a mixed agonist of the sympth. it acts indirectly to stimulate release of stored NE from the nerve endings (same as Phenylephrine, Ephedrine, Amphetamine PEA)

It acts directly on both alpha and beta receptors similar to epinephrine but it is not as potent. it causes increased systolic, diastolic p and MAP and vasoconstriction via alph 1. it increases heart rate via beta 1. it causes bronchodilation via beta 2.

it causes CNS stimulation improving alertness. it also improves athletic performance.

it is used in asthma (usu prophylaxis), to raise bp, and as a nasal decongestant. being a non-cathecholamine, it is not metab by COMT so its effects are long lasting. however its clinical uses are reducing and it si being replaced by drugs with less side effects.

hope this was enlightening.smiling face
