If You have Pt with mass lesion in the skull and You do LP, there's a great chance that LP will cause, let's say, uneven shifting of the brain with herniation of some of his structures. That'll be one of the safest ways to send somebody to the better place. For all pts with focal symptoms, papilledema and confusion and altered level of consciesness CT comes before LP to eleminate possibility of mass-lesion of brain (to ensure the safety of LP procedure).

So you mean it is used to rule out a possible herniation, that could worsen with an LP?

CT is done to rule out presence of any intracranial mass, which leads to increased intracranial tension..........and in that case if u do LP, herniation can occur.......... not to rule out herniation........
