I am curious about how one would go about switching their focus afer PGY-1 year. I am in a FP program and am curious about switching to IM at PGY-2. Is that done through ERAS, or is it on an individual basis? Thank you

You would apply through ERAS as a 1st year IM resident.

this is what i read as well. i want to go into psych but my score was too late (i took the exam on jan 17th.) i am a US IMG. only had 5 interviews. passed on 1st attempt 85/78 . have some minor research experience with LOR from US doc (an allergist.) (for psych u should get one from a us shrink.) anyhow should i wait out one year or apply into FP and switch. i applied into some combined psych programs with this in mind. or is it better for me to do an observership and then go next year. what r my chances next year. another prob is my step 2 is lower than step 1 since i rushed it. would a good step 3 cover it up??

Interesting...so you would reapply for IM as a current PGY-1? I imagine it is possible to do a PGY-1 over again especially if you are switching areas completely. I am not sure though. I actually am really happy with my FP slot and am not considering switching now, but am curious for down the line. I imagine I will be plenty happy where I am, but I was just curious... Thanks

You can only switch to a PGY-1 programme TWICE..thats it. You wont be allowed to change or sit for match third time. so make a good decision. If you don feel safe take a transitional year or prelim year. good luck

It seems that many programs want the applicant to have graduated from Med School within the last 5-7years. I am not sure that USMLE scores play a huge role in whether or not you are offered a FP spot. Depending on the state you are interested in, they may ask you the number of times you attempted Steps 1 and 2 because states vary on the number of times they will let you attempt the USMLE. You can check that list out here... www.physicianlicensing.com/Free%20Info.htm Click on FREE LICENSING INFORMATION. The other thing of importance is whether or not you are ECFMG certified. FP is a great area for Primary care training. Most curriculums include surgery time, in addition to the OB, GYN, Peds, Medicine, electives and so on. You can search through FP residency websites and find their curriculum and see the resident's training schedule. www.aafp.org/residencies

CORRECTION........ if you get to www.physicianlicensing.com/Free%20Info Click on USMLE attempts (scroll down a little) NOT free licensing information. It categorizes USMLE attempts for USMLE 1,2,3 Sorry!
