Hey guys,

Just a quick question. I only ranked one Prelim surg program on my ROL. The NRMP site only says that I matched. It does not say that I matched into a "one-year position only", therefore, am I to assume I matched into a categorical spot? or is there still a chance that I matched into the prelim?

Most likely, you only matched in a spot you ranked...so if you only ranked 1 prelim surgery, that is where you will be matched.

It is only a one year position, but with lots of potential, in that, you can switch areas after one year or apply for the programs surgery residency.

can you tell me what the diff is between prelim and categorical? Thanks.

prelim is a one year position

Categorical is the full program.

Check this NRMP website for their definitions:
