A34 years old patient is seen for trouble with sleep. He is claiming to have hallucination just before sleeping but also before awakening. While you are trying to find out more, his wife told you that he is snoring loudly at night and stop breathing most of the time during his sleep. She is also concerned by her husband’s family history which one has an uncle who is always falling asleep during the day and is currently taking a medicine she doesn’t know. She wants to know if this medication could help her husband for his problem.

DO you see that the patient is having hallucination just before sleeping but also before awakening.

Which sleep disorder is related to that?

narcolepsy is associated with hypnapompic and hypnagogic hallucinations. it is a disorder of REM sleep. but the patient clearly demonstrates sleep apnoea cos this is confirmed by the wife. his hallucintions they say are 'claimed'. there is no REM sleep option. so i will discard narcolepsy and go with sleep apnoea
