A 22yrs old male has c/o tiredness.On examination,he is anemic.lab exam shows hb 9.0 gm TIBC-normal Serumferritin- decreased.plts 160*10 power 9 wbc 4*10 power 9.MCV reduced,MCHC reduced WOF is recommended a small bowel biopsy b-Bone marrow exam c- Hb electrophorosis d- Upper GIT tract studies e-Colonoscopy

HB electrophoresis?...Why GI exam. if it was to be Fe def...there should be TIBC high...and it is normal...?...if the answer is D...can someone exlpain?

decreased ferritin decreased mcv decreased Hb normal to high TIBC all these point toward Fe def.....moreover young patient with all these findings........most commonly due to upper GI bleeding........... jvo_md...why do u think of Hb electrophoresis can u explain?........thanks...........

Well i guess that the decreased ferritin must elicit a elevated TIBC, correct me if im not right, please... He is a young male...and i don't see no reason for Fe def... Just maybe because it's the must common cause...
