I did the impossible, noone thought that I could do it... matched into RADIOLOGY (and prelim medicine)!
my creds 98/90/cs passed/US citizen/Img
No research, only one month of USCE in Psychiatry
No radiology experience, no radiology LOR (and weak psychiatry lors)
the worst part of my application was that my medical school is new, so there are only about five residents from my medical school in the entire country... and not one attending in this country from my medical school.

how can you match into radio AND prelim med?
i mean dont you match only in one of the two??

cool babe if u match into an advanced position for radiology/ surgery/anaesth/ ob-gyn etc u match into a prelim year or transitional yr aswell at the same time, if u make a supplementary list of those programs for ur ROL

so that means for the first year you do the prlim year and thensecond year onwards you go to radio?
sorry for my ignorance but i would like to understand this cos a friend of mine is intersted in radio next year.

yes that's true... I am going to be doing prelim medicine (11 interviews) from July 2006 and radiology (5 interviews) from July 2007. This December, I had only 4 interviews in prelim medicine and no radiology interviews. Everyday, I would get on the phone and just keep on calling programs and talking to the coordinators. Gradually, I started getting prelim interviews, (one day of calling actually landed me 4 interviews!) but I still didn't get any radiology interviews...Finally, I concentrated on getting "cancelled" radiology interviews... I would call up a program, and get the interview for the next day, or two days out. I would schedule a second look during the interview. I can't wait to find out where I end up.... Allah is king over everything, but sometimes people don't take this into account.

nizan thats not true. it might be difficult for an h1 or j1 seeker but green card is almost same as citizenship. if u have had gc for long enough u can apply for citizenship too.

I know it's a lot harder if you are not a citizen, but radiology is hard even for amg's..... When i applied to radiology, noone thought i would get an interview. During a second look, a program director told me "my guess is you won't match". One resident told me "your a citizen, but you went to school in Pakistan, so that really counts against you" I could go on and on about how many people tried telling me it's impossible.
I think it's all relative, You think citizen's have it easier, and I agree with you, but I look at how all the Carribean grads get to do their clinical rotations here and I think they are better off. I'm sure all the Carribean grads look at American grads and feel the same way- they even rotated in the same hospitals but are still "fmg's". One thing I can say for sure is that no matter if you are a carribean or an Indian needing a visa, we are still IMG's, and if we have to work harder for less, that's life, I can imagine a lot worse things than that.

congrats adeel...that's fantastic...it just prooves that nothing is impossible if u r ready to strive and workhard for it.so many IMGs don't even try for competitive fields for the fear of not matching.how can u ever succeed without trying?
